The Common Room / Re: Family history? EDMONDS
« on: Monday 11 February 13 06:51 GMT (UK)  »

".............
I had a visit from a very old friend (Well, he's only about 50, but I mean someone I have known a very long time!!) last year, I had not seen him for about 20 years, though we had kept in touch by an annual Christmas card and letter. He remembered vaguely from these letters that I had an interest in Family History, and was in the process of saying he knew someone who was VERY into Family History and how very 'sad' it was! He had to eat his words when I produced the 3 inch thick 'book' telling the story of our Edmonds's from 1713 to the present day!"

Good morning

I, too, have been researching EDMONDS' for well over 20 years since my 91yo.Father left me his manual information.
I have even attempted to get further clues through DNA.  This is my site -
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/edmonds/results

I prepared these pages as my contribution to the EDMONDS family groups world-wide.

Would love to have further information from your line as well.

Hope that you are well and still on-line.

Regards

Good day cocksie

Thank you for your interest.

The reason I am following up on these sub-family names is that my Great Grandfather's Death Certificate is wrong - in that his own name was inserted as his name!  This error has been confirmed by the State Archives.

George Gilbert EDMONDS b abt 1825-1833 d 1906 Brisbane.
There is no record of his birth [possibly in Wexford IRE], or his method of travel to Australia prior to 1857, I am at a virtual dead end.
He is buried in the South Brisbane Cemetery close to where I live.

So, I must now look at documents held by families.

George Gilbert EDMONDS'  family of 13 has been generally documented and they include the persons who married his daughters and their descendants.  There may be references to their names etc. in documents.

Any confirmation of these events and photo images and particularly copies of documents, will be appreciated.

Thank you

Thanks all for your responses.

Isn't it exciting?

It is, especially for the Aussies:  We did not exist in those times!

The Lighter Side / Re: Historical: Outback Australian life - cruel mid 20th century
« on: Wednesday 28 March 12 06:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello Lizzie

From reading the autobiography, I gather that Ray was born out of wedlock to a 17y.o. female and a father 12 years her senior. This was abt 1931 during the harsh depression years.

The son was left in the hands of the father, whom, possibly due to lack of work  opportunities, had Ray installed into a church home. He was abt 6y.o. at the time.  The father never visited his son!
Ray tried to run away, but was always brought back to severe corporal punishment.

There were other children of the mother. Their fate was not stated.

How he overcame his personal grief to become a Drover in western Queensland, and later, after years of study 'on the track', to become a civic leader, a Town Clerk, is astounding.

Hope I have not spoiled the book for you!

Regards

Crabbie

Well worth the read!
For those who may be interested in the rigours of cruel mid-20th century country living in Queensland

"From Stock Camp to City Hall".

In 1937, a six-year-old boy was dumped like an unwanted pup, by an uncaring father, and unbeknown to his mother. This little boy found himself imprisoned in a cruel environment of a church-run boys' home. His ordeal lasted almost ten years when he was then banished to the remoteness of a harsh existence on large cattle stations in the far Western Queensland Channel Country. His resume, after seven years stockman, horse breaker, drover, jockey, shearers cook. ................................
Now in his 82nd year, follow this true story of his journey from orphanage to Stock Camp to City Hall. In this story, you may be shocked at the brutal child abuse suffered by children, unfortunate enough to have found themselves in this institution. Follow his footsteps along the western stock routes of the Georgina, Diamantina, and Coopers Creek. A story about cattle stampeding in the darkness of night to becoming Town Clerk of Hervey Bay City.

Hello Findem and Keyboard86

Thank you for your research and responses, they are very much appreciated.

I note that the George Gilbert EDMONDS I am researching as part of my overall research, was born MarQ 1875 in Camberwell [ENG ]reference ID 727.

George Gilbert EDMONDS [b1875] was married during JuneQ 1896/Ipswich, [ENG] reference - 4a 1459 to Emily Pierce WARREN.

G'day

In my initial posting, I was attempting to find the parentage of a George Gilbert EDMONDS b abt 1870 in Suffolk:
However, we appear to be mixed up by the duplication of locality names.

My father's pedigree is -
Harold George Vivian EDMONDS b 28.12.1898 Ipswich Australia
son of
George Washington EDMONDS b 9.05.1865 South Brisbane Australia
son of
George Gilbert EDMONDS b bet 1825-1833 possibly Wexford IRE.

All were married in Australia!

Thanks for your continued interest.

G'day

George Gilbert EDMONDS, my GreatGrandfather, was born abt 1828, possibly in Wexford IRE.

After 20+ years of research, I may have been successful in tracing him to Rathespeck Wex.  He died in 1906 in Brisbane and he is buried under an imposing obelisk in the South Brisbane Cemetery [near to where I live].

What sparked my interest in this other/younger George Gilbert EDMONDS , is that I am looking for any of my GG's brothers: [He could have had 4 brothers according to a USA source.]
Perhaps this younger GG could have been a son ie. a nephew of my GG!!

I am not suggesting that the 2 GGEs are the same person!
!Even I could not respond to such an age differential!

Back to the point .....
I have not been able to confirm my GG's B&D because apparently, there was an error in recording his 'Father's Name' on his Death Certificate. His own name was inserted against that query. [Perhaps his obedient wife called him 'father'!!]
The apparent error has been confirmed by the Qld. Archives.

Furthermore, there were no Births recorded in Wexford in 1828.
Therefore I have had to search for and rely on family anecdotes.
Hence, if the younger GGE is a nephew, I can persue his family for further information.
AND/OR identify and search official records.

Is that logical?

Thank you P for once again questioning my suppositions.

Hope you had a Merry Christmas, as did we, and a happy and prosperous New Year!
