London & Middlesex Resources / Re: Metropolitan Police Records Online
« on: Thursday 23 August 12 19:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I don't want to impose, but I wondered if you could help me at all.

I have an ancestor George Batten, born 1835.  On the 1871 Census, his occupation is listed as Metropolitan Policeman, but he also has 'no arms' listed in the last column (this is confirmed as 'has lost both arms' on the 1881 census.

Unfortunately) I can't find him on the 1861 census, closest I've found is a reference to a George Batten in the army (3rd Foot Guards (Scots Fusilier) Private 497 based in London ... but have no real reason to think this is my George.

anyway - is there anyway of finding more details of his police career?

My ultimate aim is to find out how he lost both his arm, as he was an errand boy on the 1851 census, so presuming he was fully limbed then lol

Thanks!

I should really learn to search a site more before asking silly questions.   As soon as I sent this I saw the great post in the Resources section, so I'll start there :)

Hello

Is there anywhere I can see records of the Met?

My ancester is quoted in the 1851 census as working for the Metropolitan Police
can't find him in the 1861 census
Then in the 1871 census he is listed as 'armless'

Would love to know what happened, if he lost his arms in the line of duty, and basically anything about his service in the Met.

Thanks in advance.

This is the only place where i can allow someone who posts here see what i have to say.

Lesleyta
what i post here for you will mainly be on my branch of the Hedley's.

Twiglets,

There is no need to post anything here for me, I very rarely check this site as I don't really have the time any more.  I'm also in email contact with others, and between us we share any information.

Thanks anyway

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / Re: Alexander Skene - Aberdeen c1844
« on: Sunday 16 December 07 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Many thanks for the replies and help!

Yes he did marry Eleanor Cunnington ... and I didn't even think of getting that certificate - what a dummy!

There's no Lilas in our family.  Alexander and Eleanor's first born was named after Eleanor's father (Henson), 2nd male was James.

I'll find that cert and order it, any luck I'll get it before Xmas.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi there

I'm trying to find Alexander Skene born, I can find him in England on the 1881 and 1891 Census saying he was born in Aberdeen in either 1844 or 1846.

Any help gratefully recieved.

Hi Barbara

Many thanks for looking for me.  I'll have to just admit that he's lost!

I'll have a search about the police records

Have a great Christmas!

Let us know when you get the certificate Lesley.  I have a street index for the 1861 London census and am happy to look up the occupants of the address he gives on his marriage certificate.

George is still alive in 1891 (armless) I see but his son William is noted as paralysed ! What a sad family.

Barbara

Hi Barbara

Got the certificate and the address is Upper Carlisle street - no number though I'm afraid.  I think it must have been his wife Sarah's parents house originally, as the Census lists the same street as their address is 1851 and 1841.  But in 1861 Sarah's family (Chatterly's) are in Richmond street, and she happens to be a visitor there on the night of the census.

Any help gratefully received!

Lesley
