Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / Re: GLA Parish Record lookup - James HARDE
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 10:35 BST (UK)  »
Good morning, Lynda.

Glamorgan FHS Marriage Index records the marriage with the following codes:

B = Married by banns
P = Personal details, etc
W = Name of witness

These indicate that there is certainly some further information available on the register.

Regards,
Lee.

Hi Lynda,

I've sent you a Private Message to inquire about your access to information.

Hi Lynda,

I do apologise - I've got the most undisciplined mind in the world; I get side-tracked very easily when I run across a name or place that I think is familiar. It sometimes leads to a remote family connection or, more often, spends weeks following a paper trail to nowhere. I thoroughly enjoy the journey but am mostly disappointed with the results. I also tend to forget that other people don't have all day and every day to meander around their family research. So, if I say that I'm going to post back and it looks as if I've forgotten then, please, give me a (figurative) nudge to remind me!  :-[ :-[ :-[

Back to the burials:

David LANGDON, of Pentrechwyth, buried at Llansamlet 27 Feb 1886; age 60. The age and place tie in with this being the son of William and Rachel.

According to FreeBMD, David LANGDON married Ann DANIEL 4Q 1858 Neath 11a 644. I had a choice of Ann DANIEL or Catherine DAVIES; I finally picked Ann because an Ann LANGDON, of Foxhole, was buried in Llansamlet 04 Dec 1869; age 43. This seems to tally - right area and age and the 1871 census shows David to be a widower. There is no death registered for a Catherine LANGDON in the right time-frame.

The death of a Rachel LANGDON was registered (FreeBMD again) 3Q 1871 Neath 11a 301; age 12. There was a daughter, 12 year-old Rachel LANGDON, living with widower David in the 1871 census. This also tallies with a burial on 27 Aug 1871 of a Rachel LANGDON, of Pentrechwyth,  at Llansamlet; the age in the burial index is, however, given as 13M. There appears to be no Rachel LANGDON birth listed anywhere in England & Wales in 1870.

.... and there's more to come!

Regards,
Lee.

Hi Lynda,

I'm not much more than a newbie at this myself but, because I'm limited in being able to travel and, therefore, to haunt local record offices, I spend most of my days at my computer or reading books which my local library borrow for me from other libraries across England and Wales. So any information I gather is very much 'bookish' and not hands-on; I've never handled, or even seen, a parish record.

I've also received tremendous help from people on this site.

So any information that I post may be part of your jig-saw puzzle but, equally, it could seem to fit but it actually belongs to a different puzzle.

Back to the LANGDON family. I've got more burials which will probably interest you; I'm just trying to sort out in my own mind who belongs to who before I post them.

On Humphrey - I've got nothing further to add to the initial post. If he is actually a LANGDON you might have to explore outside Glamorgan to find any more. From census information, the LANGDON name seems to be concentrated in the West Country - especially Somerset.

I'll post again later today.
Lee.

But there again...

I've stumbled over some Llansamlet burials which stir the  pot again:

- William LANGDON, buried 23 July 1855 aged 61, address Cnap Goch. The age tallies well with the information that we already have for your William. This burial also agrees with the fact that, in censuses, William was alive in 1851 but dead in 1861.

- Rachel LANGDON, buried 03 July 1869 aged 62, address Foxhole (which agrees with her last-known address in 1861). But if that age is correct, then Rachel was born around 1806/7! But her age in the 1861 census was given as 64, meaning that the death age should have been about 72 if the census age is correct; I have no reason to believe that the 1861 census age is wrong because it agrees with the two earlier censuses. The death age of this Rachel is given as 61 in FreeBMD and the GRO index. I suggest that you treat this Rachel as a 'maybe' on the grounds that the information from the original informant was inaccurate - or that this could be rogue Rachel having nothing, at this stage, to do with your LANGDON family.

Isn't this fun?   ;D

Hi Lynda,

St Thomas Church was completed in about 1887 so prior to then, all church business for that area belonged to Swansea St Mary. BUT, looking at a map of the area, it seems possible that a person living just outside the then town area could live at an address known locally as St Thomas but be actually living in the Llansamlet (Lower) parish.

I can't find a Rachel WILLIAM baptism in Swansea St Mary that satisfies Rachel's age as given by the censuses so, perhaps, the best information we have is that Christmas is back on the agenda.

The closest St Mary baptisms that I can find are 2 in 1804 - pretty far out as far as the censuses' information is concerned.

Lee.

Possible Humphrey sighting!

Marriage between Humphrey LANGAN and Elizabeth TOPHAM 12 September 1779, by banns, at St Mary's Church, Swansea; both of parish.

"Humphrey" in South Wales is not quite as rare as hen's teeth but not far off, so one that has a surname close to LANGDON is worth taking seriously. William and Rachel show up as LONGTON quite regularly in the censuses.

Regards,
Lee.

Error - I should have written LONGDON not LONGTON.

In the 1851 census, Rachel's birthplace is given as SWANSEA which, if true, throws my last post into the shredder! Her age is given as 52 giving a birth year of circa 1798/9. This also tallies with the 1841 census which gives the age of both William and Rachel as 45 (real age 41 to 45).

Back to the drawing board!

Regards,
Lee.
