Cavan / Education in Cavan Schools 1860s
« on: Monday 13 December 10 03:36 GMT (UK)  »
My gt grandfather was born near Oldcastle in 1859.
He joined the army at age 18 in 1877.

The army records state that he had a "4th class" level of education.
Records also state that at age 18 he had already been in the Meath militia.

What exactly does that mean in the context of education at that time?
Does it mean he was educated to about age 9 only?

Meath / Re: Oldcastle- tracing GREEN family, score 1!

Ah yes, thank you.

Later last night I did go to the Family History website and was able to find the Irish civil registration index listings for the death of Michael Green Sr, his wife Catherine, and son Michael.
It lists film, volume, and page number, digital folder, and image number.

I'll start with tracking down copies of death certificates first then contact the parish for birth records.
Oh and thanks to Shane and others for this comprehensive instruction on ordering the certs. :

I can't express enough the happiness I feel at finding one more piece of the family puzzle.
Inch by inch...I think this hunt will keep me going until I'm 100!   ;D

Meath / Oldcastle- tracing GREEN family, score 1!
« on: Friday 26 November 10 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
After years of searching I've finally discovered through army records that my gt. grandfather MICHAEL GREEN was listed as being born in "Oldcastle parish, near Oldcastle town, County Meath."

He had been in the Meath Militia, then joined the 64th brigade in Navan at age 18 in 1877.
(Source: The National Archives; Kew, England)

The family never spoke of his parents or siblings so I've wondered if he had been orphaned.

Now that I have this birth information, and we know he is buried in Knocktemple Cemetary (d. 1906), how can I go about finding a birth and death certificate?  He was listed as being Roman Catholic and if he was 18 in 1877 he would have been born about 1859.

Is it best to pursue parish records or civil records for that time?

Cavan / Knocktemple Cemetery Lookup for GREEN
« on: Friday 26 November 10 05:59 GMT (UK)  »
My gt grandparents Michael and Catherine (Kate) Green are buried in Knocktemple Cemetary along with their eldest son Michael Joseph Green.

The son drowned in a tragic accident at age 17 in October of 1903.
The father Michael also died suddenly of illness in 1906.
The mother Kate died about 1939.

I wonder if there is some kind soul who lives in that area who would take a photo of the grave and email it to me?  I'd gladly pay a small fee.  Thank you.

Occupation Interests / Re: Irish in the British Army: 1890 to 1905
« on: Wednesday 24 November 10 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
After all this time I finally got copies of my gt grandfather's military service records from The National Archives in Kew, England.

My grandfather served first in the Royal Meath Militia, then signed on at age 18 (in 1877) to the 64th Brigade in Navan, County Meath.  Later, in 1883, he signed with the 1st Battalion of the Leinster Reg't. and went to the East Indies.

I'd like to learn more about these regiments - have "Googled" a little.
Anyone know anything about these?

Cavan / Death Lookup: MICHAEL GREEN 1903 IN CAVAN
« on: Friday 02 May 08 16:06 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother's eldest brother was drowned just a month before she was born.  His death had a huge impact on the family.

I wonder if there is a way to find out more about it.

MICHAEL GREEN was born on 4th March 1886 in Virginia, Co. Cavan and tragically was drowned on the 6th October 1903.  Only 17 years old.

I'm told he is buried at Knocktemple cemetary with his parents: Michael and Catherine.  I was wondering if there would have been any death notices in the local paper at the time.

Occupation Interests / Irish in the British Army: 1890 to 1905
« on: Tuesday 22 April 08 16:14 BST (UK)  »
My great-grandfather was an Irishman who served in the British Army circa 1890 to 1905.  I believe he may have been sent over to the Boer War.

I don't know what regiment he served in. I understand that he died in 1905 while still serving in the army.  How can I find out more about his service?

Europe / Ireland to London: 1920s
« on: Tuesday 22 April 08 15:47 BST (UK)  »
My gran was an Irish country girl from Cavan who went down to Dublin and then emigrated over to London to train as a nurse. This was in the 1920s', I believe after 1923.  Gran told me she took "elocution' lessons to refine her Irish accent as in those days it was not particularly helpful to have an Irish brogue.

Is there any record of Irish people entering England at that time? At that time she would have been coming from the "Irish Free State" on a ferry boat.  Were they even documenting emigrants from Ireland at that time?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Re: Elusive BROWN family from Ireland
« on: Tuesday 08 April 08 14:58 BST (UK)  »
Your're right and that is what I'm trying to do now - obtain death records. I haven't found any obituaries yet.

So far all records I've seen just say "Ireland" as where the family is from, except on one later US census which said "No. Ireland" , Given that the names in the family: Brown, Carr, Townsend, Davis, appear to sound more Scots or English I revised my search to the northern counties.

As for Ella Carr's name: The only daughter is named Isabella so I suspect she was named after her mother. Of course, Ella was a shortened name for several of those listed.

I'm also hoping I can locate a distant cousin in a direct line that would be willing to do dna testing which might indicate what region/family group the dna was connected to.

Well, thanks for your interest and repsonse - the search continues!
