Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Hunt Family Connections in Kingsclere
« on: Sunday 09 May 21 12:26 BST (UK)  »
Martha Hunt married John Soper on 8 August 1768 at St Mary in Kingsclere by licence. In the marriage licence John was recorded as a bachelor aged 24 & a yeoman from Kingsclere and Martha as a spinster aged 21 from Kingsclere.

On 11 October 1766 John had signed a bond jointly with his father William in respect of an illegitimate daughter born to Martha Hunt in 1766. The daughter was Sarah Hunt baptized on 18 April 1766 at Kingsclere. Martha & John had another 8 children and I can supply more details if required.

I think Martha was baptized on 27 February 1746/7 at Kingsclere, the daughter of William & Hannah, and the baptism record has her date of birth 12 January 1746/7. This ties in with her age of 21 at marriage.

I have been unable to find a marriage for William & Hannah in Kingsclere or any surrounding parishes. William was probably the one baptized 17 February 1713/4 in Kingsclere. I have not tried to find earlier generations, but will have a look over the next few days/weeks.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / William May 1782
« on: Thursday 29 April 21 19:17 BST (UK)  »
I think this must be William May recorded at Old Farm Corner in Kingsclere aged 57 born Brimpton & a sawyer in the 1851 census. His wife Sarah is aged 58 & born in Reading. Also in the house is Martha Lovelock a niece aged 11 & born in Kingsclere.

Ten years later in the 1861 census William is recorded at Old Farm Road in Kingsclere aged 65, born Brimpton & a sawyer. His wife is now Maria aged 45 and born in Burghclere.

I reckon Sarah's death was recorded in Q3 1853 in Kingsclere RD aged 63. The age is slightly out compared to the 1851 census but only by a couple of years but ages weren't always recorded accurately in the census.

I can't see any marriage for William pre 1861 but in Q3 1862 in Kingsclere RD there was a marriage between William May & Maria Rose.

Then in the 1871 census Maria May is a widow still at Old Farm Road aged 58 & born Burghclere.

So I think William's death was in Q1 1871 in Kingsclere RD aged 78.

I think the West Shefford family are the correct one. The eldest daughter was Eva Elizabeth Sampsom aged 7. If you check the new updated GRO birth index available on GRO website the birth was registered in Q1 1894 in Hungerford RD with mother's maiden name as Rolph. The next daughter Ethel Mary was born Q3 1895 with mother name Rolfs. Next Arthur William born Q3 1897 with Rolph, then Edwin John Q1 1899 with Rolfe and William George Q4 1900 with Rolph.

On a quick look I can't see any more after the 1901 census up to 1903.

In 1911 census he's living at The Manse, Alpraham, Tarporley, Cheshire with his sister Ethel Fisher and he's a Primitive Methodist Minister. Looks like he died 6 July 1961 at St Peters Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey as he left a will. If you go the government wills website you can see more, see link below.

Katy was buried in Pine Road Cemetery in Eastleigh on 3 September 1942. Luckily there is a website with all Eastleigh burial details, if you have any problems finding website let me know.

Robert Bowen Robertson was buried 27 December 1919 at the same venue.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Mary Cullinford. b. abt 1806
« on: Monday 23 April 18 23:12 BST (UK)  »
I have checked Hampshire marriage records & unfortunately there is no marriage of a Mary to a Mr. CULLINGFORD (or variations) in the period 1820 to 1838. Also no baptisms of CULLINGFORD children in the same period in Hampshire where the mother is Mary. Finally there are no male burials for any possible husband in Hampshire in the period up to 1838. So it looks as though Mary was from another county, but we don't have any clues at present. On a quick look it seems that Suffolk & Norfolk have quite a few people of that name.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / North Hampshire newspapers
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 19:23 BST (UK)  »
Over the last few years many local newspapers have been added to British Newspaper archive. Unfortunately as far as I can see the coverage for North Hampshire is not good. The only paper I can see is Hampshire Chronicle from circa 1772 until 1909, which has some coverage. It would be useful if this one source could have coverage extended until 1950. Two further titles which would help enormously are Hants & Berks Gazette and Newbury Weekly News (which also covers West Berkshire). If anybody wants more coverage of North Hants you can vote for new papers to be added, I'm not sure how much notice is taken of votes though. You can vote whether you have a subscription or not. The link below should take you to the page to vote for Hants & Berks Gazette.

Is this William Horace Wickens baptized 1869 in Kingston upon Thames. If so then in 1891 census he can be found at 30 Rochester Street in Southampton. The first name is not clear & he's recorded as 19, so age slightly out & he's a railway porter. Birth place is Kingston though.

A William Horace Wickens aged 23 living at 30 Rochester St joined Lodge of Peace & Hope (freemasons) on 18 July 1892. He was recorded as a marine engineer. As far as I can see he paid his subs of 2d in 1893 to 1895 & then 4d in 1897 & 1898. However nothing seems to have been paid after 1898, perhaps he sailed off from Southampton docks.

In 1901 census he's not recorded at 30 Rochester Street.
