Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Newman's in Chelmsford, Essex England 1800's
« on: Thursday 15 May 08 05:34 BST (UK)  »
Newman's in Chelmsford, Essex England between 1824 to at least the 1880's

My grandfather was Frederick John Newman born 1887 Middlesex, England.

I know my great-grandparents were Frederick Charles Newman and Mary Ann Simmons from my grandfahter's birth certificate.

Guesswork based on searches of the censuses (mostly transcriptions) and BMD indexes have given me the following-

Frederick Charles' father is George Newman born apx 1824 in Essex, England and his mother is Mary Bridge born apx 1835 in Southminister, Essex, England. They had at least the following children all born in Chelmsford:
George Henry Newman b 1859
Louisa Jane Newman b 1861
John William Newman b 1863
Frederick Charles Newman b 1865
Alice Mary Newman b 1868

George is not listed on the 1871 census and Mary is remarried by the 1881 census because it lists a Mary Ann Willsher with the Newman children as stepchildren to the head of house. There is a George Newman in the death index of Sep 1868, not sure if this is the right person.

Mary married Frank Willsher probably around 1872, but I can't find the marriage in the BMD index, the 1881 census show that Frank was born 1845 in White Colne, Essex, England and was a miller and stone man (stone dresser) they had the following children according to the 1881 census:
Mary Ann Willsher b 1873
Florence Willshere b 1876
Maud Minnie Willsher b 1878

Maybe someone out there is also searching for this family and might connect? or give me some tips on finding out if the info i have is correct (short of actually ordering all the certificates, which I can't afford that)

I found "Ellie" Bownes' passenger list information. She arrived on 8 October 1916 on the SS St Louis from Liverpool at Ellis Island. She was traveling to her sister Mary K. Bownes in Brookline, Massachusetts, her father was Pat Bownes. YEAH! more and more information. Thank you all.

Thank you very much, not only for the look up of the marriage index, but also the lookup for Mary Ann's birth in the Birth Index. I suppose the next step is to actually order their marriage certificate and her birth certificate.

I am very sure about it because of her son's (my grandfather's birth certificate), her death certificate, and  her obituary. And thank you for the time you have taken to look it up and reply to me.

I would like to find a record of my great-grandparent's marriage (and divorce, if possible). From the date of my grandfather's birth (28 September 1887) I would suspect they were married in or before December 1886, but couldn't guarantee that.

From various sources, I know my great grandfather Frederick Charles NEWMAN was married to Mary Ann SIMMONS (aka Molly, Polly, Mable).

from the 1881 census I have Mary A. SIMMONS listed as 12 yrs old living in household with father, mother, and siblings, in St Albans, in Hertfordshire county. That would make her birth year approximately 1869.

In the 1891 census for Tottenham, Edmonton, Middlesex county (I hope I am putting this info in the correct order, I live in the USA and am not real familiar with the British way of listing things yet) I  have Frederick NEWMAN age 25 born in Chelmsford, Essex with wife "Polly" age 22 born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, with sons Frederick age 3 and Eric age 6 months both born in Middlesex County. Again her birth year would be approximately. 1869, and Frederick's (HoH) birth year would be approximately 1866.

Her death certificate gives her birthdate as 18 September 1874, but she was known to lie about her age, therefore her year of birth. I believe the 1881 and 1891 censuses are probably closer to the truth.

Family story is that Frederick was a gambler and gambled away their house, at which point Mary (Molly) left him, got a divorce and became a mail order bride, lying about her age. She moved to America with her "nephews" (she was no longer old enough to have sons those ages) to marry Cecil B. GOODWIN. The 1910 US Census lists Mable and Cecil married for 7 yrs and that she immigrated in 1903. The 1920 census has her listed as having immigrated in 1908. Not sure which is correct. I have not found their marriage certificate yet.

Antrim / General question about surname ANTRIM
« on: Monday 25 February 08 02:07 GMT (UK)  »
I live in America and am still searching over here to find the original immigrant so really am not ready to search over there for more information on the family, but I do have a general question.

Here in the US I am finding this branch of the family with the surname ANTRIM. I read in a book on Irish surnames that there is actually no one in Ireland with the surname ANTRIM, that when they immigrated they changed their surname.

My question is this- was the book right about the surname ANTRIM being non-exsistant in Ireland? If so any tips on how to figure out what their surname was in the "old country"?

Forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong area, and thank you for any help you can give me in this matter.

Roscommon / Birth registration and/or Census - Ellen Agnes Bownes
« on: Monday 25 February 08 00:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have an Ellen Agnes BOWNES (b. 1900 Ireland) married to Walter C. LUCIER (b. 1899 Vermont, USA). I have transcribed notes from her death certificate that says her father was Patrick BOWNES and her mother was Maria ADAMS both of Ireland. It says the information was given by her husband. She died 6 November 1946 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA.

On Footnote.com I found the index card for Ellen Agnes LUCIER's naturalization. It lists her date of birth as 3 October 1900. On footnote.com I also found listed in the index for naturalization paper a Mary Kate BOWNES and a Margaret Theresa BOWNES with one for of the witnesses for both of the naturalization being Walter C. Lucier so I suspect that they may be sisters to my Ellen. Ellen named 2 of her daughters Mary and Margaret. I have not actually looked at those pages because it is a subscription site and I don't have the money to do so currently.

The 1930 US Census for Boston, Massachusetts lists Ellen with husband Walter with the 3 oldest children of 9. It lists her as being from Irish Free State. It says she immigrated to the US in 1916.

From conversation with my ex-mother-in-law, she said her mother-in-law (Ellen) came from Roscommon, Ireland which is why I am posting in this forum.

I just did a quick search for Patrick Bownes in the 1901 Ireland Census from a link I found on this forum (http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml) and found the following-
Townland:  Tully
Parish:  Tibohine
Barony:  Frenchpark
County:  Roscommon
Description: Household
Head of household Surname: Bowens
Head of household Given: Patrick(40)
Head of household Occupation:   labourer
Other occupants:  Maria(31)-Bridget(65) mother-Mary Kate(6)-Maggie(4)-Ellen(2)-Annie(2mo.)

Strongly suspect this is right family. Is there more information that would be given in the actual census, or is this everything? And where do I go next with this information?

I do not have her marriage certificate, the actual naturalization papers, her birth certificate or know the ship name or exact date of immigration. I hope I have given enough information to maybe get some pointers on where to look next, or maybe if I am really lucky someone will read this who has information on this family. And hopefully if I have posted this query in the correct format and in the correct forum, if not please let me know in a gentle manner so next time I can do better.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
