Perthshire / Re: CAMPBELLS IN KILLIN PARISH?
« on: Wednesday 13 July 22 22:46 BST (UK)  »
If the letter you referred to was a petition from your Duncan's father Peter (in which case Duncan's son will also have been called Peter if he was the eldest son as per the Scottish naming pattern) then the closest family to Killin would be Patrick and Elizabeth Campbell who had their son Duncan baptised in Comrie on 4 Feb 1769. The younger brother of Duncan was John.   However there is another candidate baptised the same year at Comrie to parents John and Catherine!
There are 6 other possibilities in Perthshire. As already suggested, histories of the area where he settled may give you valuable clues. People tended to settle near folkvfrom the same area back home.

Hi, have you seen Ken Doig tree and Ryk Brown's (of the Stewarts of Balquhidder research group)? They have both documented this family

Genegal I suggest you join the Stewarts of Balquhidder group on Facebook as this family has been accounted for there.
Lots of info that I'm sure you will enjoy!

Hi Dave
I know Monks IRL and he is a contact on FB. I will ask him to check this thread and reply.
Your Stewarts are almost certainly descended from the "Stewarts of Balquihidder".
I have 6 separate Stewart lines from there.

I am a member of the research group. There is a link to the website on that Wiki page.

Perthshire / Re: Donaldson's of Thornhill
« on: Friday 06 May 16 23:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I think there may be a connection to my Donaldson's too!

Jane Donaldson was my great great grandmother, born in Thornhill. Her father was Henry Scotland Donaldson born 1807 in Carnock, Fife. Her mother was Catherine Kennedy. They married in Port of Menteith in 1832. The Port of Menteith OPR says "Henry Donaldson parishioner son of Donaldson Dunfermline and Catherine Kennedy daughter of John Kennedy from Carnock."

Jane had a brother called Henry born 1844 in Thornhill. I have details of the other siblings too. In 1841 the family lived in Shuttle Street in Thornhill.

It seemed unusual to me for such a couple as Catherine and Henry to have met and married, coming from places so far away from each other but I know it is correct from Jane's marriage cert and from her death cert.

Can anyone see a connection to their tree?

Perthshire / Re: The McGOWANS of Kincardine-by-Doune
« on: Monday 04 May 15 20:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have McGowan ancestors from Kincardine by Doune/aka Kincardine in Menteith - some in Blair Drummond itself which is of course in that parish. I've traced back to John McGowan born 1635. His will is in the Dunblane Commissary Commissary Court.
I wouldn't get hung up on the different spellings of the name - it very much depended on what the Clerk chose to write down!  You might be interested in this

"McGowan is a Scottish and Irish Patronymic name from the Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Gobhann (Scottish) and MacGabhann (Irish) both from occupational nicknames for the village smith. It is also occasionally derived in Scotland from MacOwein , a patronymic form of the given name Owen or Ewen. Variations include McGowing, McGowen, McGoune, Magowan, McAgown, McEgown, McIroine , and Gowans."

Also , this http://www.chuckspeed.com/balquhidder/history/The%20Moss%20Lairds.htm   exp[lains why it was called Blair Drummond Moss.

I was born in Callander. The MacEwans greengrocers shop was still there until about 1980 I think - then it became a Victoria Wine. I know that I have seen a postcard online for sale showing the front of the shop with the MacEwan family standing outside. There are a couple of storeys of flats up above.
