i should add that the place is in Dumfriesshire 1774 and is likely near Canonbie.

Forfarian, you are a tech genius in my book. thanks so much. Interesting to find Hawkshall in ScotlandPlaces. Also....lots of Irving history in Bonshaw. I look forward to analyzing my sources to confirm the connection there.

Well done "Mazi". I've visited the area from Canada on several occasions and now I have a new reason to visit again! I expect nothing but rubble now but I will give it a try anyway.

Thank you for your suggestions everyone. Yes, i have the death cert for John Irving d1858 and listed are his parents Robert Irving and Margaret Graham. I am a member of Ancestry so after some searching there and on SP it appears that this John Irving was born in Bonsham, Annan in 1740. But back to Hawkshall for now....I can't find it on ordance maps. Does anyone know where it is or was?

Trying to confirm that John Irving who died at 87 years in 1858 at Caulside was the same who married Margaret Armstrong and lived and farmed at Hawkshall during his earlier days. My wife descends from this couple and I am trying to learn more about them and their families.
