Armed Forces / Re: 78th Foot Queens regiment St Helena

Thank you so much for that information. I think they were still on St Helena at the time of his death, as they had a child born either 1851 or 1852. I looked into St Helena records a few years back but they only came up with a child Thomas born there and died and nothing for the rest of the children listed on censuses as having been born there. The family were back in Leeds by 1861 census. Now I have a date I will get back in touch with the archive over there. Otherwise I don't know where to look for his death certificate. But thanks for the help, much appreciated. anne

Armed Forces / 78th Foot Queens regiment St Helena

Been searching for years for evidence of Benjamin Stark being in the St Helena Regiment and have found some documents relating to him. Could anyone tell me what 'out pension' is please? He is listed as being out pension of 6d on 24.06.1851, and it commenced on 16.07.1851. Unfortunately he is listed as deceased on 29.07.1851 but no reason give. His pension was paid, presumably to his widow until 17.07.1853.  I would love to know what the cause of his death was and how his family returned home as his wife was possibly pregnant at the time. Still one step at a time even if each step takes 10 years! Regards

Thank you so much for this. I have looked up info about the battles he was in so I know a little bit about his time there. Unfortunately he would not talk about it only said it was terrible and would not say anything else, As far as my mum knows he was gassed in the trenches when he was taken prisoner. Thanks for helping me build up my picture of his life there. anne

World War One / Benjamin Stark

My grandfather Benjamin Holdsworth Stark served in the West Yorkshire Regiment and fought at Arras, Oppy Wood and Gavrelle. His record was one of those destroyed in the fire in world war 2. Can anyone tell me where the prisoner of war camp Breslau was situated as I can't seem to find it.

Many thanks to K Garrad, I have found the notification of the new St Helena Regiment raised in Manchester  1842, so I now know how Benjamin Stark ended up in St Helena. Now need to find out what happened to him between then and his family being back in Leeds on the 1861 census without him.

Lancashire / Newspaper archives 1841/1842 researching Benjamin Stark
« on: Sunday 26 February 17 02:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching Benjamin Stark who joined the St Helena Regiment in 1841/1842, There is a newspaper article asking for recruits to enlist in a regiment drawn up in Manchester during these years. Does anyone have access to the archives of newspapers in the north of England at this time and could shed light on this please?

Hi Wild Goose, if you go to www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk and search under churches for All Saints (Anglican) Richmond Hill Leeds WRY, you will find photos of the old church and the new church, with building details and plans.  My children went to playgroups run by this church.  There is planning permission applied for to replace the churc h with housing.  Regards Anne

Hi again, just found out today that an old school friend has gone to St Helena to be the Director of Education, am hoping that she will be kind enough to look up some things at the museum, if I can get in touch with her through her last post as headmistress at a local private girls school.  Will let you know if I do.  Thanks once again for the info, anne

Hi Danchaslyn, thanks for the reply.  I've been in contact with a distant cousin Barbara who is researching Benjamins sister Sara and has also only received the info I did from St Helena.  If it is no trouble could you possibly look up the other contact info you have for me and I will also pass it on to Barbara.  Sorry for not replying sooner but I've not been doing any research or following emails for a while but I do appreciate your reply. Regards Anne
