Hi Steffi

Is this the family that you're referring to:

Yes it is, you've found many more links than I could. Thank you very much.  At

http://www.aske.co.uk/AskeHall/History.aspx

I found,'His son Thomas Dundas (1795-1873) succeeded as 2nd Earl of Zetland. He was a Knight of the Garter, Lord Lieutanant of the North Riding of Yorkshire and Grandmaster of the Freemasons of England. He was also the fortunate owner of Voltigeur, a great racehorse, who won the Derby & St Leger in 1850. The following year, Voltigeur and The Flying Dutchman, owned by the Earl of Eglington & Winton and winner of the 1851 Derby, raced each other at York for 1,000 guineas in what became known as The Great Match. The Flying Dutchman won. The 2nd Earl married Sophia Williamson, daughter of Sir Hedworth Williamson Bt. but died childless.'

A family story says that Thomas Wales was an illigitamate son of Lord Dundas. Thomas was born in April 1839 in West Lutton , Weaverthorpe parish. His birth certificate gives both his parents - they were married and he was born in wedlock. However his son and granddaughter both told the same story of his birth to their descendants and neither said anything else that has not been found to be true. Thomas was a farm labourer from an early age at Haverdale House West Lutton, later moving to Bradford and then becoming a cab driver working for himself. Brothers, either of Thomas or his son Fred, were also said to be jockeys. I can't find evidence of this either (although Thomas's son, Fred, was a very slight short man whose physical frame, I imagine,  would have been very suited to horse riding).

I still cannot find any evidence of Lord Dundas's family being at Weaverthorpe/West Lutton/Driffield etc in 1938. I wondered if anyone would know of any family links to the area?

Which Dundas family?  Some christian names please

Should be on the Yorkshire board so will ask the moderator to move it

Hello, thanks for replying. It's the family of Lord Dundas during this time frame.

Hello,

Does anyone know if there is any way of finding out if Dundas family would have visited the Driffield/West Lutton/Weaverthorpe etc area in the summer of 1838?

Also, did the Dundas family have any connection with horse racing?

This has been puzzling us for some while.

Thanks,

Steffi

Thank you very much for the link - I had looked on family search but not found it!

I now know that Mary Woolley, my great great great grandmother, was baptised in Aldford on 12 Jul 1812 and that her parents were George and Ann.

On the 1841 census, after Mary had been married there was a, 'William Woolley 15 Carver & Guilder' living -or staying - with the family. The William I have found on the site (with the same parents and birthplace) was baptised in Dec 1821 making him 19 at the time of the census. I think ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 in 1841 so this is probably one of her brothers.

Her siblings, all born in Aldford to George and Mary Woolley, seem to have been:

Martha 17 May 1807
Ann 8th July 1810
George 10 Jul 1814
Catherine 6 Jul 1817
Sarah 30 May 1819
William 23 Dec 1821
Frances 2 May 1824

There was a witness called Martha Wooley at Mary's marriage to Edward Jones in 1831 - this was probably the sister born in 1807.

I've also found a Hannah Woolley who may be part of the same family (same parents names, roughly same area)  - but she was baptised on 15th Sep 1826 at St. Mary's-on-the-Hill, Chester. I'll have to try to locate censuses with them on to see if it's the same family!

Thanks

Hello,

A terrible waste! Before you give up on this line of enquiry, it might be worth you checking with local archives just in case they have the documents there!

Glad you have some family knowledge to supply missing information,

Best wishes,

steffi

Hello,

There should be a record of an, 'affiliation hearing' which would name your wife's grandfather. Unfortunately it may not give sufficient detail to enable you to trace her family history. The name may be the only information given about him!

I would try contacting Rotheram Magistrates Court at:

Rotherham Law Courts
The Statutes
Off Main Street
Rotherham South Yorkshire
England
S60 1YW

to see if they can tell you where documents would be kept  from  a case held in 1917.

I do hope you have success!

Hello Antionette,

I'm very happy to share the information that I have found. Obviously though  I can only give you details of descendants who are alive with their agreement. I'll message you privately.
best wishes with your research,

Steffi
