I stumbled upon this page which cites a baby book giving Caroline's birthdate as 26 JUL 1863. This causes a problem since the only CW registered in Staffordshire in 1863 is Q1 1863 Stourbridge 6c 223 - too early!

Stourbridge wasn't in my shortlist of RDs to try but maybe it should be. Trying to contact the person who posted the info now.

Thanks for the contributions!  :)

Jomot, can you tell me which transcription/site you were viewing for that 1871 census please? I used the Ancestry library edition the other day and I'm curious whether you've seen a better transcription.

Thanks

Re. marriage to Brittain...Would it not have been Rowbotham?

Jackie.

p.s Re. Greybridge ...place of birth in 1911..poss. Gt. Bridge? Tipton area...

Hi, definitely says WILLIAMS widow yes, not ROWBOTHAM.

I think Great Bridge aka Greybridge is the same place mentioned above, I'm just trying to look at some old maps.

Ambly, that's a nice find, thanks. That could link them to the Toll End couple from 1861 and it would tie up all three of the different locations Caroline gave later.

I need another pair of eyes and/or Staffordshire expertise on tracing the origin of Caroline WILLIAMS later ROWBOTHAM later still BRITTAIN. What I have in reverse order is this - the trail is working back from Hartlepool...

1926 Oct 4 Caroline BRITTAIN death in West Hartlepool (inf. son John ROWBOTHAM) widow of William BRITTAIN
1911 census West Hartlepool born 'Greybridge Staffordshire' with spouse William BRITTAIN and son William [q: where is Greybridge??]
1908 June NOT inf of death of William WILLIAMS steelwork labourer inf. is son in law William BRITTAIN 10 Wilson St
1908 March inf at death of mother Mary WILLIAMS wife of William W. steelworks labourer 5 Ainslie St
1907 Middlesbrough marriage 2 to William BRITTAIN gives name as Caroline WILLIAMS widow d. of William JENKINS labourer [q. is this just an error or is it possible the family are using a patronymic?? There is no good fit to a Staffs Caroline JENKINS unless she lied a lot about her age later]

1901 census 4642-174-32 22 Winter St West Hartlepool age 33 born Dudley Staffs named Caroline ROWBOTHAM with lodger William BRITTAIN and 3 ROWBOTHAM children
1901 census Wm and Mary WILLIAMS both b. Staffordshire age 71 and 69 at 74 Mainsforth Terrace West Hartlepool, William labourer at rolling mills
1891 census 4066-67-21 Caroline ROWBOTHAM age 25 born 'West Bromage' Staffs with spouses John ROWBOTHAM and 3 R. children 31 Alice St
1891 census no sign of the WILLIAMS on the east coast?
1884 West Hartlepool marriage 1 to John ROWBOTHAM she aged 20 res Seaton Carew d. of William WILLIAMS labourer. There is a WILLIAMS witness possibly M? WILLIAMS her? mark.
1881 census I can see 4 candidates 3 living alone and one born c. 1861 Penkridge with ps Wm and Mary. The other three are born c 1862 Wolverhampton, 1864 Eccleshall and 1866 Ludlow.
1871 getting harder. I can only find one candidate b. c. 1863 Penkridge with ps Wm and Mary. residing West Bromich
1861 no Caroline Ws at all. 4 candidates for ps if already married at this stage, fathers b
1838 Penkridge
1836 Walsall
1834 Pelsall
1832 Toll End

The only birth I have viewed is the 1865 Eccleshall one which gives parents William W. and Mary BENNETT. There are several others esp in Dudley and one in Penkridge 1862. That might tie to the family in WB in 1871 but location is a bit out - she may be confused about exactly where she was born if they moved soon after.

There are two notable deaths 1866 Dudley for a 1yo Caroline WILLIAMS and same year a 0yo in Stourbridge.

I haven't looked at any Wm & Mary marriage certs, there are quite a lot of potential ones to examine.

Any thoughts welcome other than the somewhat obvious 'buy more certs' eg unless I match a birth loc to the 1871 census I am stuck. Have I missed another 1871 candidate? I have used the Ancestry census transcriptions so maybe I have missed one due to that. It seems odd I have less candidates in 1871 than in 1881?

Thanks in advance.

Perthshire / Re: John KENNEDY and Margaret Stewart Perthshire around 1800

I have this Kennedy family in my study database (which has about 130,000 Kennedys and spouses in it) and have two marriages for Duncan from Kingussie. Its easier for me though if you don't mind to use the contact form on my website as I can manage all my queries and responses better then :-)

My line is also from highland Perthshire and Kingussie is a major place of interest to the project too having the highest concentration of Kennedys outside Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Just a reminder that I am a Glasgow Kennedy and run the Kennedy One-Name study, I now have over 130,000 Kennedys in my study database. I particularly like helping others researching Kennedys in my neck of the woods, though there are a lot of them!

Best to contact me via my website as I don't visit these forums much. All welcome whether Scottish or Irish branches.
