Calmar: If you're still looking for birth info for Maria Pointon Butterworth, according to the 1921 census she was a visitor in her mother's household at 111 Abel Street, Burnley, Lancashire and her birthplace is recorded as Pittsburgh, USA.   Born 21 July 1873.  Hope this helps.

Staffordshire / Re: Elijah Mayer - Staffordshire potter
« on: Friday 08 July 22 19:19 BST (UK)  »
I have a distant connection to the Mayer family too...Elijah b. 1714 was the one who drowned in 1755 while crossing Ulverston Sands...he married Elizabeth Jebb in 1736 at St Peter, Caverswall, Staffs. His wife Elizabeth died 16 March 1790 aged 73 - she was buried St John's churchyard, Hanley.   His son Elijah Mayer was born 1749 and is the potter working out of the Cobden Works, High Street, Hanley...he married Jane Mayer, his cousin, in 1773 and died in 1813...Will dated 16 November 1811 with a codicil, witnessed by Thos.Griffin, Attorney, Hanley, Ralph Hammersley, and James Galley. Executors were son Joseph Mayer and Benjamin Neale. Bequests to wife Jane Mayer, daughter Ann and son Joseph Mayer. Proved at London 7th August 1813. He was alao buried St John's, Hanley.  The memorial inscription states:  "Elizth relict of Elijah MAYER formerly of High Carr in Wolstanton p'ish died 16 Mar 1790 aged 73; Elijah MAYER of Hanley, son of Elijah & Eliz'th, died 9 Jan 1813 aged 63; Mary, dau'r of Elijah MAYER junior and Jane his wife died 7 Mar 1779 aged 2.."

As there is no mention of the first Elijah I assume he must have been buried in Lancashire but so far I've been unable to verify this.    Hope this helps  - JS

Nottinghamshire / Rev Thomas Poynton, St Mary, Bunny, Nottinghamshire
« on: Tuesday 07 February 17 14:17 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any information on the Reverend Thomas Poynton, Vicar of Bunny in Notts., from 1714 to his death in 1765.  He is buried in Bunny.  His patron at Bunny was Sir Thomas Parkyns of Bunny Hall.  I believe Thomas may have been born in Leicestershire or Staffordshire but have no further details.

Mary Poynton (1740-1815), wife of George Mountford,  was the sister of Thomas Poynton (1753-) who married Martha Harrison in 1775  -  and Thomas was the great grandfather of your Alice Pointon who married Herbert Bourne in 1898, so there is a definite relationship link back to Hugh Bourne.   I think we have been in touch before so you may have the details of my family tree website  - if not contact me for an invitation.    Regards  -  Joan

Hugh Bourne's sister Hannah Bourne b. 1770 at Ford Hayes Farm, married George Mountford on 9 October 1791 at St Giles, Newcastle under Lyme, Staffs.  She died July 1832 at Goldenhill, Staffs and was buried 13 July 1832 At St Bartholomew, Norton in the Moors.  Her husband George Mountford  (1764-1839) was the son of George Mountford  (died 1799) and Mary Pointon/Poynton (1740-1815) of Norton in the Moors.   Mary Pointon and George Mountford senior were married 16 January 1764 at Norton in the Moors  -  they lived Adams Croft, Norton in the Moors.

Dear Dusty 2   I wonder if I could impose on your kindness... I'm looking for Saltley admission information on my nan's cousin Thomas HOWES b. 1888 Stone in Staffordshire who was an inmate of Saltley Reformatory on the 1901 census  -  in 1904 he was sent to Quebec, Canada with a group of 16 other boys... I don't have any further information until he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force at the outbreak of WW1 and unfortunately deserted. Would be very grateful for any other details. TIA  -  Joan

« on: Wednesday 20 April 11 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi  -   I'd be grateful if someone could find a marriage for Richard Lockley around 1765 in Penkridge. Brides name unknown unfortunately but their first child Ann Lockley was born 1768 in Penkridge, followed by five other children.

Many thanks - Joan

Moderator comment: Split off from a previous (completed) topic concerning Penkridge records.

Derbyshire / Durrant Road, Chesterfield
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 12:36 BST (UK)  »
On the 1911 census I have found a relative recorded as a lodger at 29 Durrant Road, Chesterfield, which appears to be a boarding house.  There are 63 single men, of various occupations,  mostly labourers but not exclusively, recorded as resident, with a male manager and his wife.

Does anyone have any idea what sort of establishment this could have been ?

Thanks -  Joan
