Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Yarnold
« on: Monday 16 May 11 11:55 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out any additional information that might be available.

I begin with Arthur Colonel Yarnold (no details known) who seems to have married Charlotte Burns in 1909, possibly in Wolverhampton. I can find 2 children - Arthur Albert (1910) and Victor Daniel (1918) I think born in Kinver.

Arthur emigrated to Australia, and I have some detail of him. But if anyone connects to the others, I'd be pleased to hear. Pointers to places I can search would be welcome.

Hi

Tell me who Agnes married, and what else you know - see if we have a match.

The Common Room / Re: ATKINSON - Yorkshire to Australia

Thank you, Yorkslass.

We have a bunch of suspicions, but very little to tie our feller to anyone in England. As there was some sort of disagreement, we suspect that family given names from there were not used for his family in Australia. As for papers...hah!

We'll keep trying.

The Common Room / ATKINSON - Yorkshire to Australia
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 20:26 GMT (UK)  »
George Atkinson was a farmer in Australia. He was born about 1800 in Yorkshire, travelled to Australia (maybe the early 1830s), married and so on.

The understanding in the family was that George’s father had owned (or worked in?) a mill. Son George was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps but didn’t want to. He quarreled with his father and took off to Australia. There was a suggestion that he wanted to own land and farm and there was more chance of achieving that in the colonies than at home. His training as an ”engineer” (his stated profession)  probably related to maintenance of  the mill machinery.

There seems to have been no contact between father and son after that.

Looking thru IGI, there is a possibility that the village of Horbury might be a good starting point. Would anyone be able to advise me the best place to start searching there, please?

The short answer is - probably.

However, I'd be inclined to try for a copy of FTM2005 - which works fine on Vista. I don't recall which version 2005 is, but maybe get in touch with TWR Computing. Don't buy the latest version!

I'm sorry to read that you paid extra for transfer software - Windows has it already built in.

I guess the new machine has Windows installed, so you don't want to alter that part of the software setup.

You will also install your main applications yourself in the proper way - so all that's left is the so-called "live" data, mainly settings and internet pointers.

The best way is to use a simple cable (about $20 in Oz) and the Windows Wizard. Rather than describe it in full, have a read of http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/crawford_november12.mspx

Some of the terminology is a bit arcane, but once you learn the trick, you will find it a useful addition to your knowledge.
