Joseph born 13 Jan.1884 Lurgan LINK
John born 19 Sept.1885 Lurgan LINK died aged 10 months in 1886 LINK
Rebecca born 6 May 1887 LINK died aged 11 months in 1888 LINK
Alice born 11 Dec.1888 LINK died aged 17 in 1906 LINK
Eveline born 26 July 1892 Lurgan LINK
Robert born 6 Jan.1896 Lurgan LINK
ALL these six children were from Moses Pentland and his wife Rebecca Montgomery
John born 1885 died in infancy so could not be the one in England married to Christina, etc.

And based on this marriage record, it appears they had another child not previously listed, Martha Pentland, b. 1882 and married to William Thompson.  See link. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1902/10267/5736685.pdf

I thought it was notable as it is the only Ralph I had ever seen referenced in Ireland records.

given that it had the FHL film numbers, I would guess FamilySearch.org.

"The Joseph who married Isabella Fulton, was my GG Uncle (b. 10th June 1891 Motherwell) his brother William John Pentland (b. 21st Jan 1885 Motherwell) is my GG grandfather.

Their father is Joseph Pentland (b. 15th January 1857 Bothwell) who married Christina Wilson Gillespie (b. 20th October 1859 Old Monkland). Joseph's father is William John Pentland (b. around 1833) who is married to Elizabeth Mains.

William and Elizabeth's marriage seems to have taken place in either August 1855 (as on their son William's birth certificate) or in 1844 (as on their daughter Elizabeth's birth certificate) but they both say County Armagh. All concerned seemed to be illiterate as noted by 'their mark' so I do wonder if the name is spelt in a different way on the marriage certificate as a reason why I can't find it.

All I know of William's parents is that his father is listed as Ralph Pentland, cab driver and Mary McGowan. This is from information on William's death certificate (I made a thread on this subject recently). But, as was pointed out to me, the death was registered by William's son Joseph and the information is probably only as good as Joseph's memory! It is possible that Joseph never even met his grandparents as I have no evidence that they left Ireland or that he left Scotland. I would like to think that the information is correct, but the name Ralph comes out of the blue (I'm afraid my family weren't very inventive when it came to names - it makes it difficult to write about them when they all have the same names!)

I have found nothing at all in my online searches in County Armargh, but I haven't been looking long.

I have done quite a bit of research on these Pentlands (and Rankins, Gillespies, Henrys) in the Motherwell and Hamilton areas if anyone else has a connection  :)

I have some references to a Ralph Pentland.

Ellen Pentland, daughter of Ralph married John McShane in Ballymore on 9 jun 1857 (FHL film 101383)

John Pentland, son of Ralph and Mary, married Ann Shevalin on 29 sep 1852 in Brannock, Newry, Armagh  (fhl film 101339)

Armagh / Re: Pentland/Pendleton in Seagoe Parish, Drumgor
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 01:16 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if this post is long.

Based on a review of Seagoe records beginning in 1747 there are no Pentland/Pentleton/Pendleton families in Drumgor until 1807, when there is the first mention of a Pentland family in Drumgor.
Elizabeth Pentleton, bap 7 sep 1801, d/o Alexr & Elizth Pentleton, Drumgor
John Pentleton, bap 22 jan 1804, s/o Alexr & his wife
John Pentland, bap 14 jun 1807, s/o Alexr & Elizth Pentland, Drumgor

Alexr Pentland, died 11 nov 1841, age 78, Drumgor
Elizabeth Pentland, died 5 aug 1848, Derrykeevan, age 80 (had lived with son George in Tartaraghan)

It seems clear that Alexander and Elizabeth Pentland are the oldest couple in Drumgor and the other Pentlands from there would be their children.  (It is possible that this couple (Alexander & Elizabeth) were married elsewhere, because there is no record of their marriage in Seagoe).

Based on the Seagoe Records that I've seen, there are at least four of their children who also had children baptized in Seagoe.

George and Jane Pentland, Drumgor,
daughter Lucy Pendleton, bap 15 jun 1823, Drumgor
daughter Eliza Pendleton, bap 3 dec 1826, Drumgor
son George Pentland, b. 1842, died 13 nov 1860, Tartaraghan

Alexander Pentland and Mart (prolly Margaret) Pentland, Drumgor
Thomas Pentland, bap 3 may.1829, Drumgor, married Jane Lyness on 26 oct 1850, also from             Drumgor
Alexander Pentland, bap 22 apr 1832, Drumgor
Mary Jane Pentland, bap 11 aug 1834, Drumgor
John Pentland, bap 1 feb 1838, Drumgor

John Pentland married Elizabeth
Mary Pentland, bap 29 jun 1845, Drumgor

Samuel Pentland, of Seagoe Parish, married Eliza Webb of Seagoe Parish on 26 mar 1842.
Alexander Pentland, bap 1 feb 1844, Drumgor

The Seagoe Yeomanry Corps record have a note that Samuel Pentland, Drumgor, emig 1846.

I have found Samuel and Eliza Webb Pentland living in Canada with five children, including Alexander, b. in Ireland.
In the 1851 Canada Census, Peel County, Ontario, Samuel Pentland is living with his wife and kids
In 1861, Samuel Penelton and famliy is living in Mono, Simcoe, Ontario
In 1871, his widow, Elizabeth Pendelton is living with their kids in Mono, Cardwell, Ontario

This is my question - There are Ancestry Trees that have Samuel's parents as Daniel Penelton married to Elizabeth Flavell/Flevil.  They don't offer any evidence of how they settled on those parents for Samuel, because evidence indicates otherwise.

Is anyone familiar with any Flavells in either County Down or County Armagh?

Is the Flavelle/Farrel name common in either Armagh or Down?

If this Pentland line came from outside Seagoe Parish, what would be the likely origin?  County Down?

If I'm going to try and find Alexander and Elizabeth's marriage, or George and Jane's marriage, what would be likely churches or Parishes?

Thanks for any suggestions.
Best,
Roxanna

The Isaac who died in 1930 in Canada seems to be the son of Thomas George Pentland and Deborah Ann Symington according to an online tree, born 1 March 1858, died in Saskatchewan.

Yes, he was their first born son.  He was born in Ireland, before they emigrated.  He lived in Ontario, then Michigan, before going west to Senlac, SK).

The six children listed belonged to Robert Pentland and Essy Sefton.
Joseph Pentland, b. 13 jan 1884, Armagh
John Pentland, b. 19 sep 1885, Lurgan, Armagh (some idea that his full name could be Sefton John Pentland - based on the death record of his wife Christina).
Rebecca Pentland, b. 6 may 1887, Lurgan
Alice Pentland, b. 11 dec 1888, Lurgan
Evelene/Eveline Pentland, b. 26 jul 1892, Armagh

See this  record,

“Private William Henry Pentland (Married Mary Anne Whitten, (see Carrowbrack 1911 Irish census) 17982, 9th Bn., Royal Irish Fusiliers, who was killed in action during an attack on the village of Beaumont-Hamel on 1 July 1916, aged 45, on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme.  He was born in Aldershot, Hants, the son of George and Ann Pentland, Ballylisk, and he lived at Mary Street, Portadown.
He is buried in Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, the Somme, and his name is remembered on a headstone in Mullavilly Parish Churchyard, and on the Portadown War Memorial and on the Tandragee War Memorial.”

Rather interesdingly if you search the 1881 census for England you will find more than one Irish born Pentland who had military connections.

If there was only one W. H. Pentland does that mean the other marker mentioned above is the grave of George Pentland and Ann O'Hara?

On Find My Past, there is a record for George Pentland, son of George, who married Anne Miller on 18 nov 1852 at Mullavilly COI, Kilmore, Armagh, fhl film 101343.
