Norfolk / good news at last /Wegg/Wagg /Durrant
« on: Friday 28 January 05 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there , thought I would share my news with you as lots of you guys have given me lots of advice on this one !
Have been tracking my gt Grandfather down , Henry Durrant , thought he was married to an Elizabeth Wegg or Wagg depending on which census you look at !
Well now her death certificate came on Wednesday and although she was listed as Henrys wife it seems they were not in fact married ...........
Have had a helping hand from churchman house here in Norwich in the shape of one of the registrars who kindly had a look for me for a marriage between Henry and Elizabeth and so far cannot come up with one !
Elizabeth died on January 14th  in 1872 aged 27 , not very old .........   Cause of death ..... decline ........
I know that Henry moved on to an Elizabeth Raby and they had lots of children one being my Grandfather George Christmas Raby , but Henry and Elizabeth Raby never married ..........    Well the first child born to Elizabeth Raby was James Raby in the March quarter of 1872 ! ...... he did not live .

So just when did Henry meet my gt Grandmother and was that the cause of Elizabeth Wegg/Wagg decline ???
Guess we will never know the answer to that one .
Now searching for the death of Henry and going to the records office on Sat for details of the workhouse at Erpingham .
My Grandfather married a widow in 1920 and dad was born in 1921 and will be 84 in April .
My Grandfather could never have known that he came from a large family , one of 12 , half of them died as children , the others I do not think he knew , as he was saved and put into a boys home rather than more time in the work house .
Will take a break form this soon the bathroom needs decorating ............ but there are more names to search for !
                          Best wishes Janet  ;)

Norfolk / Re: do I go for Wagg or Wegg ? that is the question !

Hi there Sylvia, thank you for your last two posts , just checked the   doun.org , for both Wegg and Wagg , there is nothing that matches a Elizabeth born around 1845 , worth a try   thanks .
On the info for the 1871 census for Norwich you sent me I think its Christopher Wegg there at st Edmund parish ! aged 63 with a second wife ! , now thats interesting as Iam sure I have seen a death for a Rhoda Wegg , cannot remember when though , think it was on the site Wigg /Wegg /Wagg and Wiggs  site .
I have a feeling this is Elizabeths Durrants  parents , if she is the one that died in 1872 aged 27/28 then that goes back to 1845 . What will it tell me on a death certificate ???? , up to now I have only gone for the birth ones !
thanks again Janet  :)

Thanks for that ! , thats very interesting , as I have had a guy contact me who was born a Wegg but was adopted and then his new surname was Langford , I might be able to help him with some of what you have found for me . The 1901 is a bit late for me , but very very pleased for the names on it !  thank you for that , I really need 1841 on wards , I have 1851 with Wegg , but not Wagg for Norwich , the Wegg is Christopher and Rhoda , who I think are Elizabeth Durrants  parents ???, all of a sudden Iam getting so close yet with the Wagg/Wegg its making it differclut to say the least !, my thanks once again  :)
                            best wishes Janet

Norfolk / do I go for Wagg or Wegg ? that is the question !
« on: Thursday 13 January 05 21:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, having recived another birth certificate in the post on Tuesday for another one of my GT grandfathers children , this one is Ellinor Durrant born 3rd of Feb in 1870.The maiden name of the mother on this one is listed as Elizabeth Wegg !,  but on the one I recieved before xmas it was listed as Wagg !

I have been trying for some time now to find a marriage for my gt Grandfather Henry Durrant, so needed to have the birth certificates of their children for Elizabeths maiden name .
They were all still together on the Norwich cenus for 1871 in St Augustines, and I  belive that Elizabeth Durrant died in 1872, asI have seen a death for that name and aged 27 , which would explain why Henry moved on to another Elizabeth -----Raby my Gt Grandmother and  he had lots of childern with Elizabeth !   but they never married .
On the 1851 census for Norwich there is a family of Wegg , father Christopher and mother Rhoda , they have 5 children , and one of them is Elizabeth aged 6 in 1851 , could she be the Elizabeth Weg that married my Henry Durrant ???????
I have also come across  a birth for a Elizabeth Wagg in 1845  July Aug Sept in Norwich , could they be the same person ???
My other puzzle is this , on the 1871 census for Norwich ST Augustines the Durrant family have 4 children , the last being Ellinor aged 1 , listed as Henrys daughter .
We will now jump to 1881 and Henry is with Elizabeth Raby with 4 chlidren and Ellinor is listed as Weeg  and aged  11  !   and there are sons born with the surname of Raby .
There was Ellinor Weeg born in 1869 on the 5th of Oct , to  a Rhoda Wegg , no name for father , as I Have that certificate as well , could this be this sister of Elizabeth ?????, the Elizabeth on the 1851 census had a sister Rhoda !
I have also come across a death for a Ellinor Wegg in 1887 aged 18 which ties in with 1869 .
Why could it not have been Snith as maiden name ! , Iam I right to go a long with the feeling thats its Wegg not  Wagg that  I  should be persuing ??????  , any ideas will be most welcome , with thanks Janet    :-\

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 Norfolk look up request for the name Wagg please
« on: Friday 31 December 04 11:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there Teddybear , thank you very much for looking for me , is there any chance that Wegg could mean Wagg ??as I have Wagg as a maiden name for Elizabeth Durrant and the info you have sent me has a Elizabeth Wegg as 6 in 1851, that gives a birth year of about 1845 ! and I have found such a Wagg with that year birth !.
Rather confusing is it not !
I have looked  on 1837 .com found a marriage for a Elizabeth Wagg in what looks like Norwich for 1859 , but could not cross it with a Henry Durrant !.
Not sure what to do next ? the Wagg/Wegg is rather muddling .
Any ideas would be a great help please .
Thanks once again , happy new year , best wishes Janet.

« on: Thursday 30 December 04 18:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there , could some one do a look up for me please for an Elizabeth Wagg on the 1851 census for Norwich in Norfolk ,I have a birth for Elizabeth as the sept quarter of 1845 , now there is a chance that she is the Wagg I am looking for thus her being later on in life my great grandfathers wife  Eizabeth Durrant !, she would not have been my gt grandamother as we think she died then he moved on to Elizabeth Raby and my grandfather George Christmas was born in 1886 .
I have over the last few weeks been able to move forward only just a little with all of this .
Now I need to build up a picture of the Wagg or even wegg family , any help on this one would be very helpfull in deed .
Thanks and best wishes  Janet . :)
