Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Sidmouth Parish Registers - CROSS James
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 00:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello Allan - Wonderful to hear from you!! Emily Smeath Cross was my great grandmother. She married Edward Thomas Allen in 1874 and soon after they departed for New Zealand.

My info about the family would have come from Ancestry.com......copy and paste of the notes for James Cross below. I probably have copies of the marriage certs saved in files.....a few years since I did all this.

Marriage: 1842 - At St Johns Waterloo, Parish of Lambeth. First marriage to Mary Ann Smeath, both of full age. James a joiner. Residence at time of marriage Charlotte Street. James's father Richard, a Thatcher and Mary Ann's father is Timothy, a bricklayer. Witnesses were W H Rogers and S (?) Balmarnad

1844 - daughter Mary Ann is born.

1846 - Mary Ann dies and is buried Feb 15th at St Johns, Waterloo.

1848 - 2nd Marriage at St Peters Church Walworth in the Parish of St Mary, Newington. James, widower, Carpenter, marries his sister in law Emily. Residence for both at time of marriage 13 Crown Row. James's father is Richard, thatcher, deceased. Emily's father is Timothy, a bricklayer. Witnesses were Thomas Cross and M Clarke

Would love to hear from you. I'll try and private message you my home email.

Cheers

Hello

I've just received from British Archives army discharge papers for 3x Great Grandfather JOHN THOMAS RUDDOCK which state that he was born in the Parish of St Michael, York about 1784 (or a year either way)
Unfortunately he doesn't appear on St Michael Spurriergate records which are on the IGI, so maybe he was baptised at St Michael Le Belfrey. Unfortunately the years 1778 until 1813 aren't on the IGI.
I am wondering if there is some kind person who has access to the parish records who is able to do a look-up for me please or suggest where I may find the records, if in fact they still exist?
Perhaps, if there is no John Thomas Ruddock, are there any other Ruddock baptisms around the years 1778 to early 1800's?

Mant thanks in advance for considering my request
Best wishes

Hi Jane
Guess you could say I came to the Roberts conclusions for lack of other possibilities!!

I've sent you a 'personal message' with my home email.

Hello "Cousin' Jane

So wonderful to hear from you! Some of our New Zealand lot visited/stayed with descendants of John after WW1 according to family oral history.
I've pondered the Middleton 'mystery' and researched the possible 3 sets of parents and their families for William. I've (very) tentatively come to the conclusion that they were John Middleton and Martha Toone.
I've also come to the same conclusions as you about the Roberts family.

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Sidmouth Parish Registers - CROSS James

Many thanks for that info!! Duh - I missed those two entries when I looked on the IGI as I was looking for Sidmouth. I will contact the Devon FHS as you suggest.

I wonder if there is anyone else 'out there' who is researching this family?
James married firstly Mary Ann Smeath in 1842 in Lambeth, and secondly her sister Emily Smeath in 1848 in Newington, Surrey. The Smeaths were from Sidmouth, living at The Marsh, Sidmouth, as were widowed Ann Cross and son George 1841/1851.

Devon Lookup Requests / Sidmouth Parish Registers - CROSS James
« on: Saturday 07 February 09 20:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Listers

I'd be most grateful if anyone could look up the baptism of James Cross born c.1818 in Sidmouth.

His father, as per his marriage certificate in 1848 was Richard - deceased and occupation was a thatcher. A witness to the marriage was Thomas Cross.

The 1841 and 1851 census has a widowed Ann and son George Cross both born in and living in Sidmouth. Possibly Ann could be Jame's mother. There is also a Robert Cross who was born in Sidmouth.

So, perhaps there is also a marriage for Richard and baptisms of other children entered in the Sidmouth PR. It would be wonderful to know of them also.

Failing someone who is able to do a 'look-up for me, does anyone know if there is a CD containing the Sidmouth PR's available?

Many thanks in advance
Sandra

Many thanks for your contact!! I'm a great grand daughter of Elizabeth Jemima and Tom Middleton. So I can provide you with info on their family if you'd like, a few photos also.
Yes please I'd love to know more about the Fuller link.
And we could do a share and compare on the Ruddocks and Middletons!

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / YARM Parish Registers - Mossock(e) Family
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Folks

I am searching for any birth, marriage or death entries in Yorkshire Parish Registers for the name 'Mossock', alternatively: Mossocke, Mossick, Massock(e), Massic etc.

In particular I've found the deaths on the NBI of Henry Mossock - 1684, and Frances Mossocke - 1695; both buried at St Mary Magdalene in Yarm and am wondering if the Parish Register would yield more of the family. I note that the IGI records for Yarm start in 1751.

I'd be most grateful if someone 'out there' who has access to the Yarm PR would be able to have a look for me.

Many Thanks
Sandra

Hello Mike
An update
Thanks again for the info you've provided! It's most helpful!
After searching census records, it's looking as though probably John and Martha (Toone) could be William's parents - they stayed in Broughton Astley and all their (probable) children were born there. Sarah and William lived in Ashby Parva, and Joseph and Martha in Whetstone and their children were born in those villages.

It would also appear that the families were non conformists, as I found older child baptisms for some of Sarah and Williams at Ullsthorpe Independent (IGI) (including a William  b.1814 - always possible he could be ours!) but Joseph and Martha had two daughters christened probably when they were older at Whetstone - and Richard at Broughton Astley - so there must have been a change of mind at some stage for them. No christenings found for any of John and Martha's children.

I'm wondering if you know if there was an alternative to mainstream Church at Broughton Astley or close by that John and Martha could have attended?

Also - is there anyone 'out there' who may have connections to any of these Middleton families? I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers
Sandra
