Waterford / Re: Fowler, County Waterford.
« on: Tuesday 13 November 12 16:43 GMT (UK)  »
John Fowler (born c.1836) married Margaret Egan (born c.1837) and had the following children:

Ann Mary 1850 (in Passage); Agnes Margaret 1852 (in Waterford City); Robert 1854 (in Passage); Margaret 1857 (in Passage); Winifred 1861 (in Passage); George Michael 1863 (in Passage).

John was a ship captain but later became a Publican in Waterford City and died on 4th January, 1901.

Winifred became a Mrs. Roche, but was widowed by 1901, with 4 children aged between 1 and 6.

I have found a George Michael Egan-Fowler in the UK, being raised from a young age by an uncle and was born in County Waterford around 1864. I suspect this is my George Michael, but I've no idea why he might have been sent to live with an uncle.

Margaret, Winifred and her children were living with their mother Margaret, a Publican, in Waterford City in 1901.

Any info on these Fowlers would be gratefully appreciated.

Roscommon / Re: Elizabeth Holmes, Bumlin, County Roscommon.

Hi Peter.  I've only now discovered Eliza Holmes's fathers name (through her brother William's marriage record).  He was Edward Holmes.  But there was no Edward Holmes in Roscommon at the time of Griffiths Valuation, so he was either dead or living elsewhere.

I'd still put money on it that your Holmes ancestors and my Holmes ancestors were related as it's a small townland and Holmes wouldn't be a common name.  I just need to find a link.

I'll keep you posted.

Thank you so much for your reply Peter.  There certainly appears to be a connection.  My great great grandmother was probably born around 1829 in Gortoose.  Unfortunately, her marriage record (to my great great grandfather) doesn't include her fathers name.  I think I'll have to try to get details of her first marriage, in case her father's name is mentioned on that record.

I'll be in touch  :)

Roscommon / Elizabeth Holmes, Bumlin, County Roscommon.

My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Holmes.  I have been told that she was from Gortoose, Bumlin, County Roscommon and that she had one sister Mary, and brothers Michael and William.  A Thomas Holmes was a witness to my great great grandparents marriage in 1861, and I suspect he was another brother.

I’ve searched the 1901 and 1911 Census’s of Ireland and I think I’ve found all of the above named brothers in Bumlin and Annaghmore, along with possibly another brother John in Gortoose.

Eliza had previously married John Farrell in 1856 in Strokestown and had two children that I know of - Mary (born 1857) and Patrick (born 1858).  Patrick died in Providence, Rhode Island in 1931, but I’ve no idea what happen to Mary or Eliza's first husband.  My family didn’t even know of this marriage or their children until I started my research.

I would love to hear from any distant family members or anyone with information to help my research.

Thank you.

Thanks Janet for taking the time to reply to me.  I actually had that information already.

Thanks again.

Kilkenny / Rigby/Merry, Ballincrea, County Kilkenny.
« on: Monday 20 December 10 21:46 GMT (UK)  »

My great great grandparents were Walter Merry (b. 1846) and Alice Rigby (b. 1852) and they were married in Slieverue in April 1873.  Their children were Mary (b.1874), Kate (b.1876, d.1883), James (b.1877), Anastasia (b.1879), Stephen (b.1882), Margaret (b.1887), Walter (b.1889), Thomas (b.1890), Alice (b.1892), Edward (b.1894), Kate (b.1896) and Richard (b.1897).  This large family was raised in Ballincrea, County Kilkenny.

My great grandmother was Alice Merry.

There must be hundreds of Merry descendants out there now :)

Any information will be much appreciated.

Wexford / Reddy - Carrigbyrne & Murrintown.
« on: Monday 20 December 10 20:51 GMT (UK)  »

My great grandmother was Margaret Sophia Reddy, born c. 1875 to Joseph Reddy and Sarah (Lacey ?).  She had sisters Mary (born c.1866), Sarah (born c.1879) and Bridget (born c.1883) and a brother Patrick (born c.1877) that I know of.  The family were living in the Murrintown area of Wexford when Margaret married James Dooley in 1902, but I have found LDS records which would suggest that some of Margaret’s older siblings were born in Carrigbyrne, County Wexford.

I’m looking for any information on Reddy’s in the areas of Carrigbyrne and Murrintown as I’ve no information prior to my great grandmother’s marriage.

Thanks for your time.

How did I not see that marriage record before?  Thank you so much - that's her alright.  I double checked her husbands name (John O'Connell) and the index details match.  I need to order a copy of that record to find out more  :).

I had checked the census, but I was thinking that he would have included his previous occupation or included Captain in his name - maybe?

Thanks again - I'm off to order that marriage record now.  Excellent!

Shellyesq, it's great to see him in the directories and it confirms the rest of the information.  Thanks.

Merjones, that certainly does look like Patrick's daughter.  How sad.  Between 1910 and 1920 he lost his daughter and his wife.  Now I'm wondering how they died.  Poor Patrick.

Thanks for all the help you two.  You have given me more information than I imagined I'd get. ;D
