New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Henry Granger lookup in Auckland

I love the fact that on Rootschat you can ask a simple question and people bend over backwards to help, and go far beyond anything you could have hoped for.  Thanks so much for your continued efforts on this, it is much appreciated!

Henry's sister Ellen was my wife's great grandmother.  My mother-in-law remembers her great aunt Ida, but knows very little about any of Ellen's other siblings.

I'll try make contact via that Cenotaph link and will report back :)

Ooh, that article does swing it slightly back into the realms of possibility that he is "ours".

I've got a baptism record for Henry James Joshua Granger in Durban on 11 Feb 1877 showing DoB as 3 Jan 1877.  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVS4-1QQN

Length of time between birth date and baptism make it extremely unlikely he was born anywhere other than Durban.

Henry's parents were both British (Joshua born in Leeds and Margaret Burns born in Isle of Wight).

There was an older brother (George Joshua) born in Durban in 1871 (although died 1.5 hours later unfortunately).  Six younger siblings all born in Durban too.  The surviving siblings all remained in South Africa.  The siblings were: George Joshua, Percival John, Edgar William, Ellen Maud, Ernest Uttley, Ida Daisy and Sydney Herbert.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Henry Granger lookup in Auckland

Hi all

I've had a possible hit on one of my wife's relatives in New Zealand.

The relative is Henry James Joshua Granger, born 3 Jan 1877 in Durban, South Africa.  I've found a burial record for 12 Apr 1954 in Purewa Cemetery, Meadowbank, Auckland, New Zealand for someone of the same name and born in 1877.  I'm trying to work out if it is the same person.

A tree on Ancestry said place of birth was Ireland, but another on Geni said South Africa.  The only way to be sure is to see if the death record has any extra info.

I'd be very grateful if anyone would be able to perform a lookup for me.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks all!

Theological was our first instinct but it didn’t look like a g. Comparing it with “bargain” however makes perfect sense.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Handwriting queries in memoirs
« on: Sunday 28 February 21 13:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

My 2 x great grandmother was thankfully persuaded in 1930ish to write her memoirs. We have about 150 typed pages of amazing info! There are a few handwritten inserts and two in particular have us stumped.  I have attached two images with the unclear words underlined in red.

The full sentences are:
“He was educated at Stellenbosch and was beloved by the [unknown] students, Professor and Mrs Murray, Professor and Mrs Hofmeyr, and in fact everyone who new him.”

And “Thus was I irresistibly driven by fear of another tragedy to [unknown] with my Maker because I felt that my cup of sorrow was full to overflowing!”

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
