The Common Room / Re: John Harrison clock maker 1693-1776
« on: Sunday 10 April 22 21:58 BST (UK)  »
No descendants of John Longitude Harrison in America? Harrison was married to Elizabeth Barrel for 8 years. His second wife, Elizabeth Scott, lived to age 72. Mind you, not all births were recorded in those days and wills might well include those living and/or simply those with whom one was on good terms. Sometimes the oldest son was given the farm or business while younger sons sought their fortunes elsewhere.

Some interesting evidence was left behind by a William Harrison of London who emigrated to Philadelphia with his family in 1794 to engrave some of America's first banknotes. Read about this individual at the following links, and by all means make your own conclusions!

William Harrison is mentioned 15 times in this thesis:

William's grandson (Gabriel), who had among other things become a famous Shakespearean actor in New York, was claimed to be a direct descendant of John Longitude Harrison:

Descendants of William Harrison, the original immigrant to Philadelphia, are included in a document, "Some descendants of William Harrison, engraver, born London, England circa 1750, died Philadelphia, Pa., 1803.":

This William Harrison married Elizabeth Foster on the 28th of January 1772 at Allhallows, London Wall, London, England (Source: England Marriages, 1538–1973). Would this marriage certificate provide the true identity of William Harrison's father? Might some DNA from American descendants of the immigrant engraver be available?

You don't register on that site, just do the Captcha, on the next screen put in your own name and tick the little box.
This is the place you need for searches
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

Got it! Did birth, death, marriage searches for McKennas, Quigleys and Armstrongs in Tobercurry/Tubbercurry and Sligo to look for possible ancestors of Patrick's wife, Mary Armstrong. Found NO McKennas in Tubbercurry...so they are probably from the Leitrim side...

Thanks Hallmark and Sinann!

Yes, we also think this Mary might be Patrick's sister. The links did not open for me but I found the welcome video here very encouraging: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/2016-family-history/welcome
Was at this site many years ago, but I see they have made leaps and bounds, so I will get started with registering, opening links, searching, etc. soon. Thanks so much for your help!

I to am looking for McKenna’s who came from Ireland.  From where in Ireland, I know not.
My Great-Grandmother, Catherine McKenna, came over to England from Ireland in the 1840’s and lived with her sister, Margaret McKenna and Margaret’s husband Bernard Hughes in Birkenhead.  In 1854 Catherine married my Great-Grandfather, William Taylor, who also came from Ireland, in Liverpool, and eventually settled in Rochdale, where she died in 1896.  Catherine’s father was Richard McKenna, who was a Corn Dealer, possibly in Dublin.

Hi Tina,
Unfortunately, we still have no information about any of our McKenna's. There were several in Drumlish, County Leitrim. Many settled in Rockland County, New York. I did a search for you on F.A.G. for McKenna born before 1900 in Ireland. You can see the results here:
https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSfn=&GSmn=&GSln=mckenna&GSbyrel=all&GSby=&GSdyrel=before&GSdy=1900&GScntry=35&GSst=0&GSgrid=&df=all&GSob=n
Hope this is of some help. I will post McKenna information when I know more. Best regards!

Yes, thank you, we are open to suggestions! I have posted more information about Patrick's immediate family at Find a Grave Memorial# 165656549. He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack, N.Y. Will continue to see what turns up on the ancestor side...

Very kind of you to post this and time will tell if they are connected -
A cousin will be visiting Ireland this summer and will be sent your information. Hoping she will be able to find more information about Catherine Keefe's and Patrick Conboy's ancestors. When we know more we will post it here! Thank you so much for this contribution.

Sligo / Re: Sligo - Tubbercurry - Armstrong - ca. 1868
« on: Wednesday 27 June 12 09:34 BST (UK)  »
Thank you again for the reference. It had been a while since I had looked, but I see that Mary has unfortunately still not turned up there.
At the genealogy center in Sligo, they found a Mary born in 1863 in Ballyglass, not 1868, whose parents were Michael and Mary. Michael's wife's maiden name is listed as Henry.
At the GRO in Sligo they found a Robert born to a Michael and Mary (Marren) Armstrong. After I returned from Ireland I discovered that Patrick Conboy's year of birth was 3 years earlier than maintained by my relatives and than that which appears on his gravestone in Rockland County, New York. The day of birth was the same. So, perhaps Mary Josephine was born earlier (or later) as well.
In Irish death records there are four Michael Armstrongs in Tobercurry that theoretically could have been her father:
Oct-Dec 1903 aged 68 (b. 1835),
Oct - Dec 1904 aged 84 (b. 1820),
Jan - Mar 1906 aged 75 (b. 1831),
Oct - Dec 1929 aged 89 (b. 1840).
I know that a Michael and Mary are buried at Ballyglass, but the gravestone was being restored the only time I was able to visit the area.
I have sighted the following possible siblings in Tobercurry records: Thomas (b. 1 Jul 1864), John (b. 1864), Margaret (b. 15 Aug 1866), John (b. 1866), John (b. 1867), Serah (b. 29 Apr 69), Thomas (b. 1869), Honor (b. 5 Jan 1874), Thomas (b. 1875), Michael (b. Apr - Jun 1879). What family members were always conform about was that she was the only girl with 6 brothers who emigrated to England. The only name of the brothers anyone could remember was Jim!!! No one mentioned any deaths of siblings at young ages, but it cannot be ruled out.
We know that Mary Josephine's husband immigrated to NY on 23 Apr 1888, coming with the SS Richmond in the year of the great blizzard. We have not found Mary Josephine's entry date and only know they were married 4 years after his immigration.
Beginning in 1900 the US census information often contains dates of naturalization and later the year of immigration. May be some clue there.

Sligo / Sligo - Tubbercurry - Armstrong - ca. 1868
« on: Tuesday 26 June 12 09:37 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother was Mary Josephine Armstrong born April 15th 1868 Tubbercurry, Sligo County according to her daughter. They could not find her for me in Sligo though. She married Patrick Conboy (born June 23 1865 in Dromod, registered at Rynn, Mohill, County Leitrim) in 1892 in America.  She went to America (before the 1901 census) and all of her brothers (6) emigrated to England. I was told her parents were Mary and Michael Armstrong. I found two possible parent pairs, one in Ballyglass and one in Carrownaleck.
Patrick had several brothers who also emigrated to America and a sister who married a Tighe and remained in Ireland. Their parents were: Patrick Conboy and Catherine Keeffe, called Kitty. I was told my great grandfather also had a grandmother McKenna and a great grandmother Catherine Quigley. I have info about most of the descendants in America, but none other than this for the ancestors. I am grateful for any information about these families.

Thanks so much for such a quick reply, yes I have all those for Patrick's brothers.
And yes, all of them emigrated before the 1901 census.
Last summer I visited the Genealogy Center in Leitrim and gave them what I had about the descendants.
Even the pastor in Drumlish checked his records, because my grandmother's sister always said he came from there. I walked through the old graveyard there as well, but found no trace other than a few McKennas.
After returning home, I located a descendant of one of the brothers who had the correct information about the places of birth. Then I located a first cousin of my father who verified that and gave me more info, including the name Quigley.
I imagine finding the ancestors of Patrick Sr. and Catherine will be like finding a needle in a haystack.
When I have some more time, I will try to post more about those who came to America. They settled in the New York area, but are now of course spread out all of the country.
Thanks again, so much, for your interest!
