my apologies for not saying this earlier exams over the last year have made me put my family search on hold

Thank you everyone for your information hopefully I'll be able to pass this on to my Dad whose side of the family lived at Cuckoo farm once. All he has is a painting of the farm and the family stories past down

She could have gone to a workhouse or something like that either that or she could be with another relative away from the main family.

Out of interest what was she doing for a living? If she was a serving girl/housemaid she may have gone home to another town in another district. my family tree has this happening one of the girls was working in St Albans got pregnant by someone in the house she was working at and was sent home to huntingdon.

Hope this helps

There is a village called Syston in Leicestershire it is north of Leicester if you follow the A607 on a map.

Looking at the map there appears to be a railway running through syston which means there is possibly a bridge over the railway line (?) could this be where you are looking for?

Hope thats some help

dannyb

My mother-in-law is the daughter of Richard Walker and Marjorie Brown (Richards father was John who married a lady called Alice). From what she remembers she thinks her father (Richard) had a falling out/disagreement with the family business and went in a different direction however she does remember getting a new pair of walker brothers shoes every year for christmas from her uncles.

Any information about the business (who ran it from when to when, the family tree etc) would be great, i just want to help her fill in a few gaps as her mother and father died many years ago and i think it was before she really had time to think about where she came from and what her ancestors where about.

Thanks

My mother-in-law is trying to research her family business which due to her father not being one of the favoured sons she wasn't involved in however it is obviously a big part of where she comes from.

Any information would be great i have been surfing the net and have come up with very little the details only detail we have are that it was on Mill Road in Wellingborough and called Walker Brothers.

Our next stop is the records office however unfortunately we wont get there in the very near future if anyone has already done some research i would be grateful if they could pass it on

Thanks

The Lighter Side / Re: What was the saddest death in your Tree ?
« on: Sunday 23 October 05 21:32 BST (UK)  »
The two that have really struck me are the deaths of children, both from the same family line who are both called Grace Ella but were a generation apart.

The first Grace Ella was the apple of her grandma's eye and she took the new baby round the village showing her off. As it turns out there was whooping cough (i think) going round the village at the time and she died of the illness not long after.

The second Grace Ella at 15 years old fell down the steps of Wansford village shop and caught TB. She died of her illness too.

I always find the death of children sad though, i dont like coming across the records when i'm searching the death details from the parish record.  :'(

My gt grandmother lied about her age for her entire life and even made things up to cover up the truth!!

When she got married she was actually only 18 whereas on the certificate she said she was 21 and she stuck to that story until she died in 1982 including memories about her older sister who had died 2 years before she was born!! Her parents had both died by the time she got married so there was no one to really say she was wrong.

My problem seems to be tapping the right information out of my "olds" though, you cant just ask a straight question it has to be eased out through stories, for example we never knew my granddad (my dad's father) had grown up in a sweetshop until one conversation lead my gran to mention how much he hated sweetshops. The thing is though when they start i cant write fast enough!!!

Have you been on the www.1837online.co.uk? the 1861 census is now fully searchable online. It costs 3 units to look at the transcribed details, you have to buy £5 worth at a time - if i had any units left i'd have a look for you.

If you find anything outside of the ordinary census info please let me know as in 1881 my Gt Gt Grandmother was a servant there to a James and Emma Higgins the masters of the prison.

Thanks for that guys, I actually dont live that far from spalding but live far enough that it'd be a proper trip out to see. Also when i put in cuckoo road it just doesnt appear in the spalding area, looks like the original road my have gone or it was never an official road i know what they were all like at making things up......

I'll take a drive out that way, it'd be nice to see if there is a farm resembling the one my family used to own.
