Fermanagh / Lisnaskea/Fermanagh help request - Harkins
« on: Tuesday 30 July 13 05:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My GG Grandfather was James Harkins. He was born approx. 1826 and came to Australia in early 1858. On most of his certificates he states that he was born in Lisnaskea, Co. Fermanagh. He joined the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1847 where it also states that he was from Fermanagh, and during his service he was based in Cork E. and Tipperary South. On his marriage certificate he names his father as Patrick Harkins, a clerk, and his mother as Anne Cunan/Curran. So far I’ve had zero luck finding out anything about his parents or any siblings he may have had. Most queries I’ve made tell me that he probably came from Donegal or one of the other counties, but all his documents say Fermanagh, so I was wondering if anybody can find any information linking any Harkin/s families to Lisnaskea or Fermanagh around the period 1820 to 1850?

Much Appreciated.

Elwyn, thank you so much for replying and looking up that information for me. I'll definitely follow up on the Lisbellaw Harkin family, as James lists his birthplace as Lisnaskea on all the birth certificates of his children.

James and Mary did marry in a Catholic church in Melbourne.

Thanks again. I appreciate your help.

Antrim / Re: Hamilton, Gilbert & Moore families - Ballyeaston, Ballynure, Ballyboley

....and there was another daughter- Cathrine born 31 Oct.1868 Ballynure district (page 563 in civil register)- so looks like Catherine that was born c1852 died before 1868

Ah, thank you so much. I'd always wondered if another child had been born in between Isabella and Andrew. The gap in years between them seemed unusual. I have Isabella born in 1866 instead of 1868 though?

I had the information about William being James' father and Alexander Gilbert being Margaret's father. The name Curran appears as a middle name for one of her daughters and also for some of her grandchildren. I'd always wondered if Curran was her mother's maiden name?

Henry pops up as a middle name of their children too and I'd found a James Henry Hamilton born to William Hamilton and Elizabeth Henry in Belfast and wondered if this could be James' parents? I'm not sure if it's possible to confirm these sorts of details.

P.S.- you might wasnt to go back to your 1st post and correct Andrew's date of birth

Oops! Thanks. Adjusted now.

Fermanagh / Harkins, Cunan of Lisnaskea

My GG Grandfather was James Harkins - b. abt 1827 - d. 1873

He married Mary Ann Butler in 1857 in Australia. According to the marriage certificate he was born approx 1827 in Lisnaskea, Co. Fermanagh and his parents were Patrick Harkins and Anne Cunan. I'm not exactly sure of the Cunan name or if it should be Curran?

He was a police constable in Geelong, Victoria. At various stages, including on his death certificate his name has been Harkin, without the 's'.

Any help finding out more of the Irish ancestry and connection would be appreciated, as I keep on hitting dead ends.

Many Thanks.

Antrim / Hamilton, Gilbert & Moore families - Ballyeaston, Ballynure, Ballyboley

Hi, I'm trying to find out more about my grandfather's family.

James Hamilton ( d. 1887) married Margaret Ann Gilbert ( 1829 - 1911) ( from Ballyboley) in Ballyeaston Presbyterian church in 1850.

I believe they had the following children.

William James b abt 1851
Catherine - b. abt 1852
Mary Eliza - b. 1853
Maria. b. abt 1855
James Alexander - b. 1857 - d. 1922
Mathew Henry - b. 1859 - d. 1941
Joseph - b. 1863 - d. 1930
Agnes Curran - b. 1864 - d. 1940
Isabella - b. 1866
Andrew - b. 1872 - d. 1929

I can find nothing at all about William, Catherine, Mary Eliza or Isabella after their births.

Maria married William Moore and appers in the 1901 census as living in Ballyboley. They had five children - Maggie, Mary, Isabella, Barbara and James, but I haven't found out any more other than what appears in the census.

The other children of James Hamilton I have information about - most of them went overseas to settle in Australia, New Zealand or Canada. But I'd love to know more about the fates of James and his other children.

Either James or Margaret had Huntington's Disease ( probably James due to his age at death, but it's not conclusive) and this has been passed down to a number of their children and current generations. Curious to know if it came down the Gilbert or Hamilton lines.

Many Thanks.

Australia Lookups completed / Re: Alfred John Frost born Vic ?
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 16:01 BST (UK)  »
I have been told that Alfred Henry Frost is a son of Charles Edward Frost and Louisa Leversha. ???
I only hope that I have been given the correct info.

Hi, my paternal grandmother was Ellen Frost, one of the children of Charles Edward.

In July I went on a bit of a road trip through Wycheproof, Leaghur, Boort, Pyramid Hill etc to get a few photos for my father and the family tree. I'm not much help at getting birth and death certificates etc, but I have a little bit of information from the family files that may be of assistance.

Alfred John Frost was the father of Charles. Alfred Henry Frost was the oldest son of Charles.

Alfred Henry Frost was born 28/9/1878 and died 20/6/1947. He was the oldest child according to my grandmother. Then there was:

Walter James ( Died in WW1 - lots of records on him via the Aust. War memorial site). B. 8/1/1880 - D. 20/9/1917
Ada Gertrude May.  B 17/5/1883 - D14/12/1954
Ethel Marion - B. 15/10/1884 - D29/2/1964
Emily Beatrice - B. 19/12/1886 - D4/04/1966
Bertha Mabelle - B 13/2/1890 - D5/01/1979
Ernest Charles - B. 14/06/1892 - D6/11/1957
Harold Stanley - B. 14/04/1898 - D16/06/1954
Hilda Ruby - B. 9/02/1895 - D1898
Ellen Elsie Muriel - B. 3/07/1900 - D
Mary Louisa Jessie - B25/02/1903 - D24/11/1976

On Walter J's war death certificate, Louisa states that he has six sisters and three brothers, so she isn't counting Hilda, who had already died, so I'm pretty sure this is the full list.

This is Charles and Louisa ( approx 1908?) ...

The house in Wycheproof ( no longer standing) ....

My grandmother is on the left, next to Louisa, then Mary and Harold. Taken approx 1910.

You mentioned Bertha Frost. She was a great character and I remember going to see her at her home in Harcourt and also a distinct memory of her up to no good with a birthday cake at one of the parties at my grandmother's house.

I hope that helped a bit. I'll see if I can ferret around to find out a bit more and I'm very keen to learn more about the Frost line, as most of my information goes down the maternal line.
