Oh brilliant - thank you both!
I had the parish record but didn't know I could order a certificate - I did try to order one for another family member a while ago but it wasn't able to because of the year. I'll see what I can do and I'll let you know if I find anything :)

Yes - think that's where Moorfields was. Very central.
Nicholas Gregson, the man Ellen Bryan married, was a bricklayer and they had 12 or 13 children, that I know of, but most died as babies.

Clare / Sixmilebridge RIC Morrissey around 1865?
« on: Saturday 25 June 16 12:13 BST (UK)  »
Wonder if anyone could help with a look up?

My GG Grandfather Michael Morrissey was born in Clonmel, the Waterford part rather than Tipperary (around 1839 according to UK census records) but he married a Mary Shaugnessy in Sixmilebridge in 1865.

There don't seem to be many Morrissey families around Sixmilebridge at the time so I'm not sure why he was there, but do I know Michael was later a police constable in Birkenhead so I have a suspicion he may have been in the constabulary in Ireland before moving to the UK.

My dad's cousin was told as a child that the Clonmel landowner where Michael's father worked (John Morrissey was a shepherd) persuaded Michael to 'join the army' - which might have been how the RIC was described... Kevin wasn't sure if it was just family legend or whether there was a grain of truth, but if someone could do an RIC look up for me maybe it would confirm the story? He would have been in his early to mid 20s when he was in Sixmilebridge.
I found Mary's father Patrick Shaugnessy in Sixmilebridge but can't find tithe or Griffiths records for Michael.
My great grandfather was born in Birkenhead in 1866 so Michael and Mary must have left Sixmilebridge very soon after marrying.

Are you still researching your Bryan family Eric?

In terms of Irish origins I don't have any more information than you, but I do have a GGGG grandmother Ellen Bryan who married Nicholas Gregson at St Peter's in Liverpool in 1792. They were living in Moorfields when they married and Maguire Street in the Vauxhall area of Liverpool when their first child was born.
Ellen died aged around 50 in 1821, so would have been a contemporary of your William Bryan, although it's a common name so there might not be a connection.
Even though they were married at St Peter's they may have been Catholic - the children of some of my other relatives who married there, or at St Nick's, were baptised Catholic.

Julie,

You may not know that this wonderful forum can be accessed free on rootschat.com.

Sorry - didn't explain properly! It was the question of Clonrush that I came back to after new info from Ancestry. I took a break from Ancestry for a couple of years but I've been looking in on the Rootschat Cheshire forum regularly.

I hope Deer looks in again - would love to know how we're related!

I hope this reaches the original poster of the message - Julie.  We must be related as these people are my relatves too.
And I have had exactly the same trouble with this placename.  I cannot find anywhere in Ireland with the names Courish or Courush.

I can't see an 'L' in there at all.

Was this ever resolved?

Hi Julie here - I just came back to this a couple of days ago having renewed my ancestry sub. In the 1911 census Anne Toole's birthplace is Clonrush as suspected.
Anne's daughter Mary was my great grandmother.

I think maybe Thomas's police record is the way to go if I can get hold of it. That should show whether he died while working for them or retired.

Thanks for all the help!

I wonder if she was estranged from her family on account of the marriage? Not that anyone should have been able to track her down from a census return...

Much to puzzle over... did you see that Onisphorus had two daughters called Hannah - presumably the Hannah born in 1813 died and the child born in 1820 was given the same name.

Do you have access to the 1871 census by any chance? Just wondered if Thomas and Hannah appeared there. Sorry - I really do have to resubscribe to ancestry :-[

I'm heading off to my gardening chores now btw. Happy Easter ;D
