This could be them in 1871, but it doesn't help you much :

9 Fourth East Row, Coxhoe,
Patrick Flanigan, head, 50, Miner, b. Ireland,
Elizabeth Flanigan, wife, 53, b. Ireland,
John Flanigan, son, 14, Putter, b. Sedgefield,
RG10/4966/125/2

Alan

Thanks Alan,

That's a great help. I never thought to try An*****y search with Hanigan!!.
That definitely looks to be them. I've checked other census for that family just in case and they don't appear anywhere else except as Flan(n)igan. Owen seems to have already started to have called himself John, I'd love to know the story behind that one, in all the later census he calls himself John but on the main registration certificates (marriage and death) he stays as Owen :-\

Despite what you said it may actually prove to be extremely useful. On the next page of the census there is a family of Coates (Eliza's maiden name) The Parents were born in Ireland and on later census they're listed as being from Down and later still from Colkinebry Parish and Sallycavel, both of these appear to be transcription errors but I can't yet see anything in County Down that they could possibly be unfortunately.
In the first instance I need to see if there's any evidence of a link between Eliza and William Coates, in the late 1850's they were living just a couple of miles apart and this appears to be when William first came over from Ireland. Plenty to work on anyway!!

As an update to this I finally solved his use of John when he appeared to called Owen on all documentation except Census. I believe he was called Eoin which would have sounded and been written as Owen and the English derivative is John. at least I think that's what it was!!

My Great Grandfather, Thomas William Flannigan, was living in the Pub when he enlisted into the Army in 1915, known then as "The Bush" and later Bush house. I think it got demolished sometime in the sixties

Hello,

Anybody who has relatives who served who were born or living in East Howle or the Metal Bridge area please feel free to contact me to see what information I can share, this research includes service records, family history research I have completed and photographs of headstone or memorial.

Alternatively I would be grateful if you could share any information you have too.

Hi Andy,

I have the Flannigans who were born in Kelloe and East Howle, living there in 1901 census

Thomas William served in the Royal Army Service Corp Remount Division who were responsible for the supply of horses to all army divisions. He joined up in 1915 and was medically discharged in 1916.
His brother John signed up with 2nd bttn DLI  at the outbreak of the war and fought around Ypres. He was killed aged 19 in September 1916 by which time 90% of those he embarked with were killed or injured.
It was a large family with a few other brothers but I haven't found any records for those so far

Bill
I'm trying to confirm that a Robert Wilkinson (my GGG grandfather) was the father of William Wilkinson (my GG grandfather - born 1830 Kirkby Woodhouse and married a Matilda Marsh).
I've attached William's wedding certificate (bought via Ancestry.co.uk) but his father's names is bizarrely blank or erased.
Have you any idea why this could be?
From your post (many thanks) it would appear Robert is the father of William.
I'm a Wilkinson and live in Kirkby in Ashfield.
Thanks in anticipation.
Mark

Moderator comment: transcription of certificate:
27 Jun 1851 Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire
William Wilkinson age 21 bachelor of Eastfield Side (father's name & occupation blank)
Mathilda Marsh age 22 spinster of Eastfield Side father John Marsh, FWK
married by banns, both signed with X, witnesses Samuel Crosland, Ruth Crosland - her mark

Mark,

It appears to be another branch of Wilkinsons

I believe my William Wilkinson was born in Kirkby in Ashfield in July 1830 to Robert and Hannah but Hannah died shortly afterwards and the family group moved initially close to Coalville then headed up to the North East and settled in Hetton le Hole, Co Durham. William married Elizabeth (Pearson?) and his father Robert lived with them until his death in 1878. I have each of the census returns for the family group from 1841 onwards and the later ones all confirm William born in Kirby and Robert in Ticknell , Derbyshire. Elizabeth was born in Pittington, Co. Durham

Kerry,

I've got Sarah born Davy Lamp, Kelloe 1859 Dau of John Thomas Turton and Elizabeth Cutts. John Thomas was born 1829 in Brimington, Staveley, Derbyshire and was the son of William born 1790 in Staveley, Derbyshire, Married to Martha Cutts (a different branch of the Cutts family).
I've got the family pegged all the way back from there to the late 1500's or so, so I'm OK in that respect, I was particularly interested in whether you had any photo's of the Turtons in your collection. It's always good to put a face to a name!!

Thanks

Bill

Hi Claire,

Is there perhaps any mention of Wilkinsons from Ticknall, possibly using Melbourne or Castle Donnington Churchs. I'm particularly interested in Robert who was born about 1798, the son I believe of Robert Snr and Elizabeth Ford. I have a sneaking feeling that he may have been baptised a few years later in Ilkeston (on LDS)

If you're still looking for North East Baptists  there's some useful info on this website http://www.billgreenwell.com/fish_tree/index.php?key_id=669

Thanks for the replies Bill and welcome to RootsChat!

I've been trying to find further information on the Wilkinson family who moved to Hetton in the 1840's from the Notts/ Derby area where they appear to have been keen Baptists.

I've got all the family details from Census records but have been unable to find any BMD details from Church records. It's a shame there's no online records as I don't live in the North East anymore (moved back to the ancestral roots in the east midlands!) Establishing the maiden names of wives is a bit of a chore when there's various options on freeBMD and no back up data online.

Coincidently the family were living in Pemberton Street in the 1861 Census, twenty years after William Greatrex was there!
