Shane, you are correct with respect to the Christopher Kelly 1901 census result. When I first discovered it - looking at LDS records in Salt Lake City about 15 years ago - I still had 2 mysteries: 1) where was his wife (the expanded form says he is married - not a widower), and 2) where was my grandfather Michael?
Further investigation with LDS records yielded this:

Note the location. He and a young sister is staying with an older sister, with a different (married) surname. The age and location matches Michael's birth certificate.
I believe that when I mentioned the marriage certificate in my initial posting, I was referring to Michael's, not Christopher's - I dont believe I have the latter's. Both parents were listed as deceased in 1920, and I cannot find either in 1911, so the family story of Christopher's death in 1903/4 remains possible.
