Hi cb1964. Did you ever discover more about your Thomas Burfoot running the Bull? I may be able to shed a little more light on things. Please feel free to contact me through my website at www.hibbitt.org.uk

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: St Thomas baptism lookup please - Henry Ridley

Thanks Trish. In my excitement I missed the Lancs OPC site. I didn't know of this site beforehand so I've learnt something useful for future reference.

I have thought for some time that my Henry was quite unreliable.

Last night I found the WW1 service record for Joseph Henry who died in 1915. He had been living with people called Drury for several years and didn't know where his sister, Jane was living. His parents were both deceased by all accounts and the Drury's were not only his landlords but in place of his next of kin. What a sad tale.

Thank you to you both Donald and Trish.

Trish, I have seen Henry with Elizabeth on a few censuses and have hypothesized as to whether he is mine. You seem to have found some interesting information which I haven't got, it's been a little while since I explored my Ridley side. Might I ask where you found the Baptism details? That marriage took place the year after my great-grandmother was born which is really quite sad if this is indeed my Henry.

Something that had struck me before was in 1891 his next door neighbours were called Cottrell. My great-great-grandmother was Hannah Maria Cotterill - she's the Ann he had the five children with. It could just be a coincidence of course. I have been unable to say for certain that this is my Henry but your new information looks like something definitely worth persuing. Thank you so much.

Donald, you are probably correct in that if we are related at all, we might be too distant to show up as a DNA match depending on how far back in time we might connect. However, if you are looking to find out who your grandfather was, it might well be worth persuing. It is such a close relationship that I should have expected some cousins would show up in your matches to help narrow the search. It's dependent on who has tested, of course.

Good luck with your research.

Annie

Thank you for your reply Donald. My Henry Ridley remains a brick wall. I have not managed to tie down who his parents were as there are several Henry Ridleys about during that period. The one census I can be sure of is when he is with my 2 x great-grandmother in 1871. They never married and so I cannot send for a marriage certificate to get an idea of who Henry's father was.

There was a Henry Frederick Ridley born and baptised in Birmingham in Jan 1840. He was the son of Joseph and Mary and the reason why I'm considering these as Henry's parents is because he has children called Joseph and Mary. However, I realise this is very tenuous.

If you have done a DNA test, it would be worth comparing as my dad (who has taken the AncestryDNA test) is Henry's great-grandson and is bound to carry some of his DNA.

I would like to continue this via email but I can't for the life of me remember how to do a personal post so I can give you my email address.

Annie can you tell me how to do that.  Sorry but I have only done it once before and it was some years ago.

Hi Sandra. Nice to talk again. You just need to click on the person's username next to their post and then choose 'Send PM' which means Personal Message. Or, alternatively, use the icons below the person's profile picture. Rachael has a PM icon and an Email icon.

Sandra, is there some doubt about Dinah Goulding not being William's wife or could there be other possibilities? FindMyPast is showing this marriage...

There was a Dinah, daughter of Thomas Golding baptized in Arlingham on 26 February 1766. And there was another Dinah baptized 3 March 1751, daughter of Benjamin Golding but I would put the 1766 one as the most likely candidate but worth trying to account for the other one before settling on the later one. No mothers are mentioned.

My ancestor, John Oliver, is shown living in Bramwith Woodhouse, Kirk Bramwith, in the 1841/51/61 censuses. However, the 1851 and 1861 censuses state John's birthplace as Smeaton, Yorkshire. I'm not sure but I'm guessing this may be Kirk Smeaton.

Is anyone able to please look up the baptisms for Kirk Smeaton for me. I believe he was born in about 1802. I'd like to know who his parents were and any other information that might be available.

Many thanks.

Annie

Sandra, I just typed out a long reply and went to preview it and it disappeared. The gist of it is that I ascertained a lot of the new info from obtaining wills as well as receiving assistance from the helpful people at the Forest of Dean site - http://www.forest-of-dean.net - they sent me through some images of the Newland parish registers. Sadly, there are some missing entries because the rats got to them.

Yes, there were two Arthurs & Janes - our James' brother and James and Mary's son. The son married Jane Higgs at Hawkesbury in 1762. I must get around to expanding these lines on my tree at some stage.

There is a document at the Gloucestershire Archives (http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/genealogy/Search.aspx) as follows:

1747 pritchard arthur C   P170 OV 3/4/23   Overseers

I have a feeling this is James & Mary's son. After James died and before Mary married Mills Gwinn, she may have needed to rely upon poor relief for her son, Arthur. I don't know what became of her other children, apart from our Benjamin and the two Williams who died as infants.

Hi Sandra,

Just seen your message and it's reminded me to let you know that last year I managed to go further back on the Pitcher side. You may want to take another look at my site - the top of the tree now is Arthur & Ann Pitchard -  http://www.hibbitt.org.uk/familytree/fam88209.html who were parents of Arthur Pitcher/Pitchard who married Ann Ansley and these were the parents of our James.

James' brother, Arthur (1696-1770), married Jane Marshall so this is where the Arthur & Jane come in.

I still cannot absolutely corroborate that James' wife, Mary's, maiden name was Driver. However, after James died, she remarried Miles Gwinn/Gwynn and they had a son, Stephen, who died as an infant.

Cheers, Annie
