Fantastic!

Would you be able to go down his family free to see who his living relatives are?  We could then surprise them with the photo of what he carved in a monument in Egypt...

Armed Forces / Can anyone help - Sapper I A Wheal 1892

Hi
This photo was sent to our Facebook group by someone that had been to Egypt on holiday as we're all ex-Sappers - would be great if we could find his records and then find his ancestors and give them a copy of this photo.
Can any of your experts help?

The "engraving" says (but it looks like he made a mistake on the H)

SAPPER
I. A. WHEAL
R.E. 1892

Any ideas anyone?
Cheers
Dave

All I have is the scan of the photo so not sure what might have been on the back etc.  It was taken in Cupar, Fife.

Many thanks everyone.  This lady died in 1888, so looking at her in the photo, I imagine it must've been taken not too many years before that.  I'm not sure when she was born but it would've been around 1800-1810-ish.  Hope to hear more from you.

Can any one help me identify what this ancestor of mine is wearing?  It'll be dated in the mid to late 1800's in Scotland.

Armed Forces / Re: Muster Roll - 2nd Dragoon Guards - upto 1794
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 18:52 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks - will check it out.

He didn't leave the Army, he enlisted in the Fife Fencibles when it was formed in 1794 by Col James Durham of Largo.  I believe he may've transferred from another Army regiment and that's why I'm exploring the possibility that he came with James Durham from the 2nd Dragoon Guards when he raised the Fife Fencibles.  See info below...

Any other suggestions or assistance is very welcome as I've been searching for a years!

Of this family was General James Durham of Largo, born January 14, 1754, who served in the army no less than seventy years, having entered as a cornet in the second dragoon guards, June 22, 1769. On the 21st of September 1794 he received the brevet of major; and, having raised the Fifeshire Fencibles, he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of that corps, October 23, 1794

Armed Forces / Muster Roll - 2nd Dragoon Guards - upto 1794

Please can someone help me?

I'm trying to find out if an ancestor of mine was enlisted in the 2nd Dragoon Guards upto 1794.

If he was, then how can I find his details, especially his date and place of birth?  I was hoping his details will be held on his regimental muster roll or other book.

Any help would be very much appreciated.
Dave

I think you may've got your dates wrong as the Fife Fencibles were in Ireland from 1795 to 1803.

I've been in touch with Kew and they say they have very little as records didn't survive.
