Shropshire / Church Stretton Hotel Fire 1968
« on: Wednesday 15 May 13 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I recently attended the memorial service that was held at St Laurences church in Church Stretton, that payed tribute to the victims of the dreadful Hotel fire that took the lives of 3 young boys and 2 women who worked at the hotel on april the 2nd 1968.

As part of my role in the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service History Society i would like to write a story about this incident for the website. I have an account from a fire fighter that attended the incident but i was wondering if anyone might have any more information or pictures?

I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction to be able to find the news footage from back then? The story made the national news?

Any help would be much appreciated

Many Thanks

Katy

Shropshire / Oswestry Fire Brigade Research Project
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 21:24 GMT (UK)  »
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service History Society are starting a new project to research and produce a Historical Timeline for Oswestry Fire Brigade – once completed this can hopefully be displayed at the station for all to see.

A Heritage Open Day at the Station will also be organised on completion of the project – inviting members of the public to attend. (Dates for this to be confirmed nearer to completion).

We are seeking your help! If you have any local information or items relevant to Oswestry Fire Station that you wish to share please contact the History Society:

Shropshire / Re: Oswestry Fire Brigade,Looking for photos 1920 - 1940 approx.
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 21:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Barbara,

My name is Katy and i am the founder of the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service History Society. I have recently (only 4 days ago) started a project for the Oswestry Area with the intention to produce a historical timeline for Oswestry Fire Brigade to be displayed in the station.

As part of my research i have been in contact with a few local people that also have a passion for local history. I am due to meet with them soon. At the moment i am limted to just a handful of photographs for the 1920 period of the brigade.

If i come across any i would be happy to share them with you. Please email me at sfrshistory [-- at --] yahoo.co.uk so i have your email - if you can state your Grandfathers name i may already have a photo or records of him in my archives?

Many Thanks

Katy

p.s i have just come onto this forum to write a post about Oswestry Fire Brigade and saw your post at the top of the list - coincidence!

A Tribute to Inspector George Henry Faulconbridge who is currently the only Firefighter who has tragically lost their life in the course of duty in Shropshire.

Hi all,

ive discovered a pretty nasty story in my family tree and wondered if anyone knew how i could find out more information.

The Story:
William Baillie Livingstone (aged 3) fell off a slide in the playground at the Miners Welfare Park in Bo'ness when a rung gave way - word has it that there was a big hoohah about the comapny who built the playground who offered compensation which was refused. His father said it would not bring his son back. The slide was removed. William was carried in the arms of his big sister Mary all the way home where he died not long after. 28th September 1937 - address:-  9 Dean Brae, Bo;ness

Ive checked the British online newspapers and have come across nothing?

Many Thanks

Occupation Interests / Police and Fire Brigades Post World War 1
« on: Thursday 17 January 13 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

Ive started a project researching the local history of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Im currently working on a story about a person who was a Sergeant inspector in Shrewsbury Police force but also a Second Officer in the Fire Brigade.

I know that befor World War One the majority of Fire Brigades were run by Insurance Companies.I also know that with the threat of World War Two Auxilary Fire Brigades were introduced. The problem i have is the time in between these two events!

So really 1918 - 1938? Im after anyone that can help me complete my timeline of events for this period?

Many Thanks

Katy
