Canada Lookup Request / Re: Edith Emma Styles
« on: Tuesday 12 January 10 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
Have just come across this post whilst looking for Styles relations.  The Marsh sisters married Frederick and Walter Styles who were younger brothers of my Great Grandfather Henry William James Styles.  Frederick was born in 1882 and Walter (who was known as Um!) in 1883.  Frederick and his wife went to live in Canada.  My mother, who died a few months ago, talked about them and gave me a lot of the Styles family history.  She said that Walter (Um) had 2 sons, Norman and Walter, that she knew of.  She also said that Frederick married a Marsh sister and went to Canada with a set of tools and £10 and gradually worked his way up to be managing director of a coal/lumber business.  She thought his wife died young in Winnipeg.  They had a daughter called Dorothy and a son who had 2 children. I have a photo of Frederick and his son and daughter and on the back Mum has written that Frederick and Dolly came to England to visit family in 1938.  There is another photo with Fred and Mum's grandfather during that visit. Also have a photo of Walter and his wife.

If you would like to get in touch I can send copies.

I have a photo, left to me by my mother, of a Jewish lady called Lea Davidoff.  Lea was a refugee from wartime Europe who stayed with my mother's parents in Sandwich, Kent.  The photo is signed on the back by Lea and dated 1940.  My mum had fond memories of her and said she was a lovely person.
Does anyone know how i can find out more about Lea?

The Hodgmans you quote are all Faulkners!  Their mother was Gladys Lilian Hodgman who married Frederick William Faulkner in 1924 (my paternal grandparents). The younger Gladys Lilian was known as Lil and Nellie Mabel was known as Mabel.  My Dad was Fred. All now dead, sadly.  There were 3 other children, one of whom was stillborn.

I believe the older Gladys' father was Walter George Hodgman, who's father was Alfred D Hodgman and mother was Alice Foat.  I see your name is Foad - is that the same as Foat?  It would be great if you were a long lost relation and could share your tree with me.

Thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / burns family of colton area
« on: Wednesday 06 May 09 21:57 BST (UK)  »
I am in a real pickle trying to trace my husband's Burns ancestors.  His aunt is absolutely convinced that they are descended from Rabbie Burns the poet, which i think is highly unlikely!  I have looked at a website which lists all  Robert Burns' family and we definitely aren't there.  Anyway, i would like to prove it one way or another but am having huge problems as there seem to be swarms of Burns in Colton, Lancs and i can't work out who belongs to which branch.

This is what i have that is confirmed by certificates etc:
Jane Burns born 1869, father = Arthur Burns born 1838 married Mary Abbotson, his father = James Burns born 1815 married Margaret Rigg, his father =Arthur Burns married Ann born 1790

The James born in 1815 shows in the 1841 census and in his household are James Dawson and James Barrow.  From Family search i have found a Charlotte Burns born 1795 who had 2 husbands 1= John Dawson and 2=James Barrow. Also have Charlotte Burns(Barrow) and Mary Barrow (Burns) on the 1861 census.

I have the marriage certificate for James Burns and Margaret Rigg and a James Dawson, Jane Burns and Mary Burns and John Nelson are the witnesses.

I really need to get definite info on the Arthur and his wife Ann born 1790 and then to trace back a generation or 2 so as to prove or not the Rabbie Burns thing.  My head is were called Burns, Dawson or Barrow!

I would really appreciate some clear thought on this

Thanks
