I worked at Zachary Merton in the 60s and it was both for men and women then.  People were sent from Loughborough & Leicester hospitals to recover after having an operation.  We would walk (the ones that could walk) to the pub just round the corner for a bottle of stout. Those that couldn't walk, we would fetch them a bottle of stout back to be drunk on the ward! The grounds were beautiful and we would fetch armfulls of flowers to decorate the hospital with.
The children's home was before Zachary Merton as you came from the village of Woodhouse Eaves, but on the same road.  :)

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: look up please Bateson/Thinn -1841/1851/1861/1871/1891

Just a last note to say thank you once again to everyone who has helped me - I would have been at a loss trying to find all this out on my own.

I have come to the conclusion that Maria, is in fact my Alice Jane Bateson. (thanks Tati for putting the idea in my head) The dates are bang on, and it is the only answer to the mystery.  As Alice Jane Bateson does not show up anywhere else. With Emily being born in Canning Town too, it's just got to be her.

I am so grateful to you all  ;D

Hi again to everyone and I just can't thank you all enough for your help - I would never have sorted all this out on my own.

I don't have Alice Jane's marriage certificates but I have found something interesting that I didn't notice before. Her daughter who was named Annie May (born Canning Town) is listed on the 1901 cencus as Annie Maria! also she named her first son George - I think these coincidents, together with the fact that:
Even if this is the wrong Alice Jane's birth certificate (B.1864) that I have, her mother & father are still listed as George Bateson & Maria Bateson (Shinn). So even if it's not MY Alice Jane, where is this child in 1871?
She is definately born in Canning Town, W.Ham, Essex.
I think it is the right birth certificate now that I have had a good think about it all but I just can't understand where she is in 1871 - has anyone any ideas?
Thank you all so,so much  ;D

Yes, that's her in 1881 with Samuel Winkley & family.

I'm still having doubts if I have the right birth certificate though?
In 1891 she is living in Barrow in Furness - listed as Alice Jane Bateson widow but born 1866 Canning Town.
The only Alice Jane Bateson born in Canning Town, that I could find was born in June 1864 so I thought that it must be her - now I'm beginning to wonder?  ??? I can't find any other Alice Jane Bateson's born Canning Town though - I've got a headache! :-\

Now I'm having real doubts!
Could I have the wrong birth certificate for Alice Jane Bateson?
Surely there couldn't have been two Alice Jane Bateson's born around the same time in Canning Town Essex could there?  ???

Thank you so much everyone for your relpies and the brilliant information  :)

My search for Alice Jane Bateson has been so confusing and doesn't seem to be getting any better!  ???
Have I got this right?
George Bateson (Alice Jane's father) was also known as George Birch? It couldn't be two different families could it?
This George Birch/Bateson then marries Maria Shinn. Where is Alice Jane though? I have Alice Jane's bith certificate and she was born 13/6/1864. Father George Bateson - mother Maria  Bateson, formerly Shinn. Living in Canning Town Essex.

Alice Jane Bateson married David Warren in 1882 Canning Town Essex.
She turns up 10 years later in 1891, at Barrow in Furness, calling herself Alice Jane Bateson (not Warren, and is listed as a widow). She has a son in 1892 who she calls George Warren!  ??? Then she marries John Rooney in 1894 and has a daughter Annie May Rooney (born Canning Town)1894.

I can't find the death of a David Warren between 1882 & 1891 either so I wonder did he die!?

Can anyone tell me if I have sorted this out right?  Thanks so much  :)

Norfolk Lookup Requests / look up please Bateson/Thinn -1841/1851/1861/1871/1891

Can anyone help me please to trace:

George Bateson. Born 1828 Leziate, Norfolk
also
Maria Thinn (that's what it looks like). Born 1828 Gayton, Norfolk

They married at some point as I have found them in 1864, living in Canning Town Essex.
They have at least one daughter, Alice Jane Bateson. Born 1864 Canning Town Essex.
George is listed in 1864 as a shipyard labourer

I think they show up in 1881 still living in Canning Town Essex (listed as living alone)
Any help would be brilliant - thank you  :)
