Family Bibles / Coton family - bible
« on: Sunday 24 May 15 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Not really a 'family bible' - there's no list of family members etc. - but a bible inscribed as a gift from her parents to a Nineteenth century Fanny Coton on her 21st birthday.

I have no idea of location - and can't remember how it came into my possession.

If anyone has an interest in it, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Warwickshire / Re: Where is/was canley gardens, coventry?

If you have a look for example on Google maps, Canley Gardens is the area bounded by Canley Road, The Riddings, Bates Road, the railway line and Rochester Road. Strangely Beechwood Ave isn't usually considered to be 'Canley Gardens' but is nearby.
It's a very 'leafy suburb' of Coventry. Nearly all the houses are detached or bungalows. Only a sprinkling of semis.

Thanks, falcybe

That's a brilliant reply and pitched right at my level! Much more confident to have a try now - and can't wait for that smugness to manifest itself.

Thanks again for taking the time to help and for explaining how things should (will, I'm sure) progress.

All the very best to you,
Viv

Due to inexperience and not a small amout of naivety, I have two trees on GR and pay two subsciptions. One tree has my wife's family (I only make an appearance as the husband and father of our children) The other has my family and my wife only appears as my wife (if you see what I mean!)

I've become disillusioned with GR recently and so I've bought FTM2012 with the intention of transferring the trees using GEDCOMs from GR.

On FTM2012, which I haven't loaded to my PC yet, I'd like just one, merged family tree.

How do I best achieve that please?  Is it best to merge the GEDCOMs somehow. If so could someone explain how I do it (step-by-step please - I'm still not that PC literate) Or should I (if I can) create two trees on FTM2012 and then manipulate those?

Any help/suggestions would be gratefully received and much appreciated. Thanks.

Might well be worth you registering and making contact about this and your British restaurant posting on the same site (I mean The Butts site!)

Dorset / Local knowledge? Manston
« on: Friday 04 January 13 17:43 GMT (UK)  »
My wife's father was born in Manston, Dorset in 1913. A contemporary newspaper announcement says it was at 'Old Manor Farm' The birth certificate just says 'Manston'
His parents had married in 1911 in Longburton and, as far as we know, there was no family connection with Manston.
I can see from modern and also from old maps that there is a 'Manor Farm' in Manston (opp. The Plough PH) but was there a separate property - Old Manor Farm - or perhaps it was a nursing home/cottage hospital?
I've looked at the occupants of Manor Farm at the time and their names mean nothing to the family.
Has anyone knowledge/records of the village in the early 20th Century please?

Thanks, RRYFS

....and no worry about the Bournemouth visit - all's well that ends well.

I took your advice earlier today and emailed Beaulieu and had a reply waiting when I got home this evening. They have copies of 1913 vintage and I'll use their service to get a copy of the article.

Many thanks again for your interest and information - it really is appreciated.

Thanks to you both - that's given me a nice couple of options.

Colin - I've emailed the library at the VMCC

Graham - you're right about the navigation at the BL site ! - but thanks to your hints I got there.  I searched for 'Motor Cycle 1913' and I'm not sure of the results that came up. I'll speak to them - think I'm better at that than website menus.....

thanks again.

Thanks, Richard

That article is where I found the info (today!) - obviously, being Morgan-orientated, it shows the cyclecar and sidecar racing. But wait long enough, eh? .....and eventually everything will be on the interweb.

Really good of you to ask about this for me.
