The Common Room / Re: Calling Urquharts Worldwide
« on: Monday 02 July 18 23:32 BST (UK)  »
I just don't believe it!!!!! There has been a clan gathering in Cromarty which only left today (Monday 2nd July 2018) for Glasgow! They have been carrying out an archaeological dig at Castle Craig.

All the information is still as above in my post all those years ago eg. Will Urquhart is the Clan Chief, and if you look on the Internet you should find their contact details and how to join the Clan Urquhart Association. Hope to see you at the next gathering which could be next year.
Best Wishes,
Patsy

Armed Forces / Re: Frank Keeff Coldstream Guards & Worcestershire Regiment

Hello Again, and Thank You for all your help with the KEEFF family, who did not like registering births and marriages it would seem! No luck finding a birth record for Frank yet!

I have found a John Keeff in London on the 1851 census living in Lambeth, (HO 107/1569) but born in Hull, with the occupation of a hatter, and then a marriage record for a John Keeff in Whitechapel shortly after that date. The next record I can find for a J. Keeff is serving in the Crimean War 1854 - 1855 14th Regiment Number ??386 (page not fully open when scanned) and alongside are some letters, possibly H & R then some numbers possibly a date of 24/1/57.  Reference W O 100 Piece:27 Any idea what the letters and numbers stand for?

I am hoping that this John Keeff is the father of Thomas Keeff & grandfather to Frank Keeff and the inspiration of Frank joining the Guards. Do you think this is possible or am I barking up the wrong tree?

All help gratefully received.

Thank You ALL

I would never have guessed he was born in Hull.  I have now had a good look at all the information on Ancestry, and found it very interesting, plus the photo on his Reformatory School record is a real bonus.

Can I view the newspaper records/reports on-line?

Thank You once again for all your help - where would I be without RootsChat?
Best Wishes,
Patsy

Hi me again folks,

What I forgot to mention was the marriage took place at St. John, Notting Hill, and that is why I had been searching in that area.

Thank you for looking at my messages.

Hi RootsChatters,
I need some help please in finding details about Frank Keeff, and I am having difficulty as his surname has various spellings!

My starting point is the marriage certificate for Frank Keeff to Ivy Kate Cuff on 13th March 1917. On the certificate he is 28 years old and his occupation is Private, Coldstream Guards, address The Barracks Caterham. He records his father as Thomas Keeff, Engineer.

With that information I searched the medal records and found him both as 8124 Private, Coldstream Guards, and Private 47917 Worcestershire Regiment.

I then tried to find his birth certificate and sent for Frank Keeffe who was born 22nd March 1884, 9 Manchester Street, Kensington Town. No father on the certificate, but mother Annie Keeffe, Laundress (which was a very common occupation in that area). Now this is a bit older than than I would have expected from the age given on the marriage certificate, and of course there is no father named Thomas so there is doubt if these two certificates relate to the same Frank!

What would be really useful is a service record (full of good information!) because without some clues of birth or census returns I have come to a full stop. The only census return I have found is for 1891 at St. Mary's Orphanage in Heston and Isleworth RG12/1025 where there is a Frank Keefe aged 7, born Middlesex St. Pancras. Do you think this is yet another Frank or does he belong to the birth certificate, marriage certificate or neither?

All suggestions very gratefully received.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

I leave the computer for a few hours and come back to three pages of fantastic information - what can I say but WOW!!!!!!!

I am actually researching this family for very good friends down under in Oz who we hope to visit very soon, and I was trying to start off their family tree. That has now turned into a flying start. They will be so thrilled.

Thank You all once again.
Best Wishes and happy searching.

Dublin / Ledgerwood Family
« on: Saturday 19 July 14 23:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folk,

This is a bit of a long shot, but I was hoping that someone could find me a record of a marriage and a  birth in Dublin.

Charles Edward Ledgerwood, born c1863 in Pett, East Sussex, married a Rosina Amelia (surname unknown) born c1873 Maida Vale. The marriage would be somewhere around 1894 and as their first daughter Gladys Maud Ledgerwood was born in Dublin c1895 I thought the marriage might have also taken place in Dublin. This information has been taken from census returns, but I have been unable to trace a marriage for this Charles and Rosina or birth for Gladys.

To complicate matters even further when Gladys married in 1915 (ending March qtr. Woolwich 1d 1821) she married a Charles Ledgerwood.

Glady's siblings were Charles Edward Ledgerwood born c1899 Aldershot. Leonard H. Ledgerwood born c1903 Chatham. Cyril Algernon Ledgerwood born c1904 Chatham. Alfred James Ledgerwood born c1907 Eltham, Kent & Leslie William Ledgerwood born c1908 Eltham, Kent. Some of those places have strong military connections so do you think there could be a possibility of needing to search military records?

All help greatly appreciated.

Thank you Janis,

I was just hoping for some more names of children - I always live in hope!

The McCullough's by the way are Malcom Henry McCullough married Agnes Harper in Saintfield church Downpatrick, Ireland on 12th December 1852. The other Malcom is their son who was head teacher at the school in Leamside. He married twice, first to Barbara Ferry and when she died very young he married Alison Mary Blackett. The Thomas Harper McCullough was his younger brother.

Just to complicate the family tree after Agnes died Malcolm Henry McCullough married for a second time, this time his wife was Barbara Gibbney (nee Cochrane/Cochran) on 9th April 1893 where else but St. Mary's West Rainton. Her son was William John Gibbney and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Jane Gibbney (nee Thompson). If you follow Elizabeth Jane and husband William John Gibbney down the family tree you find a daughter named Nora Alice, she married a Mr. Welsh, and their daughter married Richard James Barrass. I said it was a complicated tree!!!!!

Thank you for taking all the time and trouble to send me the information.
Best Wishes,
Patsy
