Good morning.
My grandfather Hubert Spence-Thomas married Jean Robertson Foulis  (b1862) who on marriage changed her name to Ruby and knocked 10 years off her age!  Jean R Foulis's sister was Mary (Marie) Margaret Foulis born 1855 in Edinburgh Scotland.  It was a large family, father Robert Foulis was a teacher then Headmaster but they fell on hard times.  Marie's brother was a doctor and I guess she met her husband William Alma Aylmer Lewis in Northumberland where he was working.  They married in 1878, had three children Georgina Emily Mary Aylmer Lewis 1879, Sarah Muriel Jessie Aylmer Lewis in 1880 and Rose Aylmer Lewis in 1881.  Marie died 1884 and her husband married again in 1886 and went on to have more children.

Not sure about the turning away from the door, marriage to a doctor was security, father (Robert Foulis) by this time had left the family and was living in New Zealand.  Both Georgina and Sarah married in 1903 and 1905 and went to live in Canada.

For more information on the Foulis/Aylmer Lewis families suggest you go back over the postings I have made in Rootschat under axecalibre, would love to know more stories of Meredith family. A sister Mary Anne (Marianne) born 1864 married Havilland le Mesurier Chepmell of Ottawa Canada, later lived in Ontario, they had six daughters and a son Bruce.  Also another sister Annie (Nan) Sturrock Foulis came out to Buffalo via Ellis island in 1893, wonder if she made contact with her family??

I hope all this makes sense!!  The Foulis children's names were all very similar and they had nicknames, I found 15 registered,  several who died in childhood.  A hard life!

Thank you for reply.

My grandmother was (Ruby) Jean Robertson Foulis, her brother was Robert James Foulis, his son was Robert Oliver Foulis, the husband of Maggie.

Wow, didn't realise Margaret had a twin brother, have William born year earlier, guess he is the same William or did he die and another William/Margaret born?

Would be interested if you have any info on Margaret's marriage to Robert Foulis, he was a rotten husband to her, a womaniser and con artist - however they did have a son Charles Atkinson Lyle Foulis born 1913 and died 1953, he was a seaman, twice torpedoed during WW2 and died when his ship ss Yew Valley sank between the Thames and Aberdeen.  Charles married Isabella Taylor Lawson in 1944, no children as far as I can see.  Margaret lived 11 Jackson Terrace, Aberdeen, the Lawson family lived at No 9.

Look forward to hearing if you have any further information

Thank you jon, yes found that, amazing the variation in spellings of the name, have been going cross eyed!

Have been  searching for William for 12 years, so glad to have found him, though in sad circumstances.  His sisters all survived to have families.

Thank you also Carole, another possibility.

Thank you for that info Carole, so if he was in a mental institution will not be able to find him.
Cannot access St Marylebone records to find when he was admitted.

No marriage record for him as far as I can find.

Last record was on the electoral roll at 108 Bethnal Green Road in 1898. Would he only be on the electoral roll if he was aged over 30?

William born Edinburgh 1866, think I have him in Brighton in 1891 (where his mother and sister were living) under the name of Foles, occupation barman.

The family then all seemed to move to London, living in various parts.

Thank you for your help

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / William Stuart Foulis
« on: Friday 10 February 17 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
In earlier posts I was looking for William Carrick Foulis.  His brother Robert James Foulis named him as executor in his will in 1895, as William Stuart Foulis of 105 Bethnal Green Road, London.  When Robert J Foulis died in 1897 William Foulis was removed at his request as executor.  William was listed as William Steward Foulis on the Electoral Roll as living at 108 Bethnal Green Road in 1897 and 1898.

Next comes his death 8th November 1905, London County Asylum, Banstead, William Stuart Foulis, aged 37 years, and under occupation 'Unknown' below which is written "St Marylebone Workhouse'.

If anyone can help fill the gaps between 1898 and 1905 I would be grateful - William was admitted to Banstead on 12th August 1905, presumably from Marylebone Workhouse but cannot find any records of his admittance.  Have searched the 1901 census records but to no avail.

Thank you for your interest and help
