Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: Ellis/Covey marriage

Hi Sue

I've just re-read my original post and realised that I actually meant Alfred not Albert.

I'm a descendent of his step-son Raymond John Lee (he assumed the surname name Ellis at some point). Do you live in the area?

Yes, as far as I have researched Mrs F. Covey would have been Dorothy's mother. Emma Lee married Felix Covey in 1905 in Horsham, Sussex - I haven't got the marriage certificate for this yet.

I always wondered if there were letters, as I believe Alfred died in 1915 during WW1. I believe his son (also Alfred) died in 1945 during WW2.

It's nice to 'meet' you!

Hi Hannah, I also have been looking up any info on Alfred Ellis and Dorothy May Covey. They were my Grandparents on my mothers side>Crystal. They are all buried at Slinfold Church, nr Horsham. The other children were Stan (half brother) Anthony, Joyce and Crystal. I have some letters from WW1
sent from Alf to Dorothy. Some Barns Green and some Five Oaks, Billingshurst. c/o Mrs. F Covey, presumably her mother. Who is the Albert you mention?

Regards

Sue

Hi Tracey

This may be a long shot since this thread was last updated 9 years ago, but having just gone on one of my random searchings by surname in my tree, I came across your thread.

I am a descendant of Henry Adam's grandfather Robert Ormes (c.1843-1922).

If you're still researching this, let me know, maybe we can pool resources. It'd be great to hear from you (and your contact Christine).

Thanks,
Hannah

You may already have come across this but a George Henry Smithers was baptised in 1884 in Burgess Hill, son of George and Louisa. May have been a brother. Something to throw into the pot.

I'd considered him before, however his father, also George Smithers (as per census records) was born about 1866, therefore too young to be the father of Eliza (b.1873).

That was helpful to reconsider them however, so thank you!

My biggest mystery is Eliza Smithers. She marries Luke John Booker in 1892 in Staplefield, Sussex, where she's noted as being 19 years old (b.1873), the daughter of George Smithers. She's in the 1911 census where her age corresponds to her marriage record and is noted as being born in Burgess Hill, Sussex. However, the 1939 Register has her birth as December 1875. Despite having this information about her year of birth and her father I cannot find any record of her prior to her marriage to Luke.

In comparison to the surname Smith, Smithers appears relatively uncommon, yet that is unfortunately not working in my favour.

The only way to get information from a registry office marriage is to purchase the certificate

Thought that might be the case, thank you anyway :)

Surrey Lookup Requests / Ellis/Covey marriage

Hi all

I'm looking to find the ages, addresses, parents and witnesses to the marriage of Alfred Ellis (b.1885-6) and Dorothy May Covey (b.1894 Sussex).
They were married around 19th October 1914 at Guildford register office.

Hoping by knowing Albert's father I'll be able to narrow down a birth for him.

Thank you in advance :)

Hannah:  You posted this message a long time ago... just seem it now. It would appear that we are (distant) cousins... please do get in touch if you pick this message up.

Kind regards - Colin

Hi Colin

I've been trying to contact you for many years about Albert. I found your email address on another website, but it always bounced back. It's great to finally hear from you.

Regards,
Hannah
