You mention newspaper clip.  Local papers often have announcements of deaths and funeral arrangements - perhaps this might give you at least the cemetery.  I will probably be getting a subscription to the local papers through the imuseum in 2 or 3 weeks time.  If you post details I will check for you.  Alternatively someone else may be visiting the museum sooner and can check for you.

Hi
As far as I can make out Hugo Flinn c1785 was married to Susannah c1790.  They had two sons named John and Daniel (possibly also a daughter who remained in Ireland).  John (c 1831-1885) married a Bridget O'Hare c1829-1904 and Daniel married Alice Bannon (known as Ally).  Their children included Daniel jnr, Hugh, Alice, Ellen or Eleanor and Sarah.   Alice was my great grandmother.  Daniel jnr among other things became a fish merchant and was responsible for reviving the Manx kipper industry (see Ramsey Courier 12.5.1899) and was also Mayor of Douglas Corporation as well as being an alderman for many years.  Hugh became a ship owner and lived in Liverpool.   I do have the family tree on Ancestry, so a search for Daniel Flinn b 1848 should enable you find it.   If you don't have access, then post an email address and I'll contact you with more details, photos of headstones, etc.

United States of America / Re: Ellen and Sarah Lewin

Hi and thank you for your reply - I'll certainly try that.   I did know about the US census dates - put it down to a senior moment.   Pity the 1890 isn't around.  Such is life.

United States of America / Ellen and Sarah Lewin
« on: Monday 31 January 11 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
Don't know if anyone can help but Sarah Lewin was born in the Isle of Man in 1851 (her maiden name was Flinn).  She left for USA around 1876 after the death of her husband, Charles Lewin.  I believe I have found her on the 1881 New Jersey Census as a servant named Sarah Lewine in the home of Samuel Cooper in the city of Camden.   Her daughter Ellen (or Eleanor), born 1868 in the Isle of Man, also moved to the USA with Sarah's sister (another Ellen) and her husband, Philip Hanneberry (various spellings including Hanneborg).  Ellen is also listed on the 1881 census but in Philadelphia living with the Hanneberrys and shown as scholar and niece.

I can find no further trace of either mother or daughter and not sure where to look, possibly either or both married in USA.   I know Ellen's cousin Margaret Hanneberry married a Charles Wagner in Philadelphia.

Does anyone have any suggestions.    Lewin in this case is a Manx Gaelic name and not an Anglicization of Levin or Levine.

Many thanks

Down / Backaderry Flinns
« on: Tuesday 14 September 10 11:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone help with the Flinns who I believe came from Backaderry (if the entry on the 1911 IOM census is to be believed) and moved to the Isle of Man. Certainly the family came from County Down. I have Hugo born c 1785 married to Susanna, son Daniel (c1816) married to Alice Bannon (c1813). There was possibly another son John married to Bridget. Daniel and Alice's oldest daughter (also Alice) was born in Ireland c1842 but the other children were all born in the Isle of Man.

Any suggestions on how I can get further information would be appreciated - at the moment I am not able to visit Down.

Many thanks

Hi Shane

Thank you for replying.   My GGrandfather was married in Feb 1876 but whether the statement about his father implies he was still living I wouldn't know.  I assume that it must be Little Bray as Joseph varied between saying he came from Dublin or Bray on different census entries.  Don't know if this helps.  Thank you so much for the response.  Joseph himself was a mariner and came to the Isle of Man where he met and married my grandmother.
