Yes, we are trying to search for him as he has a few grandchildren that he's never met & the fact that there's been so many stories regarding him - all of which were bad it would be good to hear his side of it all.
Thanks for your suggestions & I will try the link for Durham first as we've had that many different & confsuing tales we never know what to believe

Family History Beginners Board / Can anyone help me?
« on: Monday 03 January 05 17:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have previously put a post regarding trying to trace my husbands father.
My mother-in-law has been etremely secretive giving us details on him.She has just visited us & we have a little more info & I don't know where to begin

She says his D.O.B is 20th September 1935 & he was called Ernest Hibbert, His birth mother was called Maria Hall & apparently was murdered by her husband in Durham! He was then brought up by a couple called Jack Wild(e) & Annie Waters.
They later changed his first name to Alan. He lived at 29 Victoria Rd, Askern Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

He went into the Cold Stream Guards aged 17 in 1952 & probably stayed there until 1962/3.
He then stayed in London & was with the Richardson gang which rivaled the Krays! -(we think this could be why she's may have been secretive)

He met & married my mother-in-law in 1966 in Pontefract, West Yorks & they went on to have 3 other children, including my husband.
He left  in 1981 when my husband was 14 yrs.

She has given us his national insurance number - although we don't think we can use this to gain any info on him.
We have tried all our previous links with the help from roots members & I'm hoping that with this new info we can try & find something out about him.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: William and Bertha GELDER
« on: Wednesday 15 December 04 16:00 GMT (UK)  »
I've been speaking with my mother regarding the Gelders & to her knowledge Harry married a  (Madge) Marjorie, they had Graham & Helen who would be 40yrs+ June would've been on her 40's but died 3/4 yrs ago & Roy in his late 30's now.
We can't remember when Bertha died but I would guess around 5yrs ago.
My father thinks they have a photo of her in a pub called the Spotted Leopard, Wakefield around 1965, with Harry & Magde & some of their children. He's going to find it out - hoping he's still got it.

I don't know if this is of any help but, I remember reading about a "Bertha Gelder" in the death's section of my local paper the Wakefield Express. I think it said she lived at Dacre Avenue, Lupset,Wakefield.
I knew some Gelders of Lupset & I'm sure she was their grandmother, their father was called Harry - so this could've been one of her other sons.

Thanks Hoppity, I don't know if we will ever find my husbands father as we've heard so many different tales over the years, it's as if no one wants us to find him. I will give your suggestion a go though -fingers crossed :)

Family History Beginners Board / How do I find out a death in a workhouse
« on: Tuesday 14 December 04 22:32 GMT (UK)  »
My husbands maternal grandmother remembers having to identify a mans body in 1933 in a Pontefract (West Yorks) workhouse when she was around the age of 10.
She thinks it could've been a family member & if it was she thinks the surname would've been Hallatt.
Also, she thinks another family member was in the mounted police in Leeds his name was Albert Hepworth - how do I access both of these records?
Thanks in advance

Amazing thank you ever so much, I just hope my grandmothers still awake to give her the good news -Thanks again ;D ;D ;D

This has to be them as my G,G,Grandfather was called Lorenzo & had a brother called Simpson & we could never work out why he was called Simpson Gomersall - he emigrated to New Zealand pre 1939 to a sheep farm.
