Thanks very much for this :-) Doesn't get me any further at the moment but I shall store the info and hopefully it will help me in the future.
Thanks again.

Hi Douglas,

Thanks very much indeed for sharing this information - it's very interesting indeed. I would be most grateful if I could have a copy of the photos of the gravestones (if possible) - my email is

Email addy removed in accordance with RootsChat's privacy policy.  Please use our secure Personal Messaging system to exchange private information.

I don't know how to attach a document to these threads (or if it is at all possible), so if you contact me I can send you a descendant report with all the info I currently have on the Testers.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on with the grave in St George's churchyard.

Zoe

I've just received a copy of the marriage cert for Amos Tester. Here's the info it contains:

March 12 1848, St Margaret's Church, Leicester

Amos Tester Age: Full, Condition: Widower, Profession: Mechanic, Residence at time of Marriage: Wilton Street, Father's name and surname: Jonathon Tester, Profession of father: Gardener

Lucy Ann Barratt Age: Full, Condition: Widow, Profession: - , Residence at time of marriage: Church Gate, Father's Name and Surname: John Branston, Profession of Father: Wool Sorter

Witnesses: John Branston and Eliza Branston

Whilst Amos Tester and John Branston signed the register, Lucy Ann Barratt and Eliza Branston both made their mark (+).

.........
So.... I do think Amos is the brother of (my) John Tester - with their father being Jonathon Tester, Gardener (occupation is confirmed in census info). This doesn't get me hugely further in my hunt for John, but maybe it's of use to someone else!

Many thanks for this. I hope your contact will get in touch! (I'm also on GR so maybe he'll find me there)

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Northampton baptisms, TESTER, 1820s
« on: Thursday 23 July 09 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I am trying to track down baptismal info for these relatives:

Susan Tester b about 1823 Northamptonshire m 1846 St Seps, Northampton to Benjamin Cross

Elizabeth Tester b 1820s ?Northamptonshire m. 1858 Northampton

Emma Tester b about 1823 ?Northamptonshire m 1853 Northampton to William Wood

I'm sorry for the poor information on these people, but I'm hoping that as they all married in Northampton, they may have also been baptised there (they are three sisters) and if anyone could check this for me, I would be most grateful.

Best wishes,
Zoe

Hello Jayne,

I don't know what period of time you're interested in but I come from a family of Tofts with roots (at various points) in London.

http://www.kuvik.net/ztoft/index.html

is my family tree site and

http://www.kuvik.net/ztoft/jansentofttree/srn/d/2/d235c0572a337edea130cb34091a8a86.html

will take you to all the Tofts

As you'll see my oldest Toft ancester, Joseph Toft (b about 1780) and his son, Richard b about 1805 were from London), but more recently my father and grandfather (and various cousins) were/are from  (south) London.

All the best,
Zoe

Hi Mike,

Thanks for these baptisms, a couple of which I didn't know about so that's really helpful.

According to censuses my direct ancestor, Anna Tester was born about 1826 in "Leicester" (no more detailed info currently known) - would it be possible for you to check for her if you haven't looked for baptisms that late into the 1800s? Her parents were John and Martha, and she may have had siblings Susan, Emma and Elizabeth (?baptised 1825).

Anna's father John was baptised on the Weslyan circuit in Beds, so I don't know if the family continued this tradition in Leicester. Anna was baptised as an adult in 1845 in Essex when she was working for the Curate of Rochford so maybe she did convert.

And yes, you're right, Jabez and Ann married in St Mary's - my mistake. Thanks for pointing that out.

Again thanks for this info on the later St Margarets baptisms.

Hello all,

I am trying to establish if

Ann TESTER, m. John Cox 11 Jun 1823, Saint Margaret, Leicester
Lydia TESTER m. John Green 25 Sep 1827, Saint Margaret, Leicester
Mary TESTER m. Mattias Brown 5 Jan 1829, Saint Margaret, Leicester

are related to "my" Testers -

Parents:
Jonathan Tester and Mary White (of Bedfordshire)
Siblings:
John, Jabez and Amos

John married Martha Robinson 30 March 1818 St Mary, Leicester
Jabez married Ann Fairchild 8 June 1831 in the parish of Saint Margaret
Amos married Matilda Lynes 19 Nov 1830 in Saint Margaret

If anyone could look up these Testers ie Ann, Lydia, and Mary for their birth records (presumable early 1800s given when they got married) and let me know their parentage (or any other information), I would be most grateful.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Zoe
