Australia / Re: James William Kendall of Shoreditch-THANK YOU
« on: Tuesday 09 January 18 11:37 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you to all of the helpful souls who have posted to this thread.  I think I can safely say that James William and Mary did not marry in Australia and possibly never married at all!  It is possible that they sailed from Adelaide but some research into passenger lists would be a good idea.
I truly appreciate all of the assistance that has been offered to solve my rather confused query!

Thank you Milliepede.  Yes, some of it was posted years ago but at that time I had not learned of his new wife.  Just hoping for some news on that front!  ::)

New Zealand Completed Requests / James William KENDALL Marriage & Children
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 10:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone might be able to have a look for a marriage - it should be in 1881

Between
James William KENDALL, born Aug 1854 from either Shoreditch, Middlesex, England or Dorking, Surrey, England, Father: James William KENDALL, Upholsterer (aka William or William James)
And
Mary (surname unknown) born approx. 1864 from Adelaide, S Australia

James William KENDALL was first married to Ruth Elizabeth STONEMAN on 5 Aug 1876 at Masterton. Ruth was gone back to Jersey, Channel Islands by 1881 census and she stated in 1911 census that she had 3 children.
I have the birth of first son, Julius William KENDALL 4 July 1877 at Masterton and I understand that Maud Elizabeth KENDALL, born 18 Dec 1875 in Wellington (before her parents married) was called Elizabeth on her birth certificate but she later goes by Maud

Thank you.

Thank you CANDO for searching for the marriage and for ruling out my JW from the news items. Thank you majm for finding information on the burial and CANDO for proving the JW who was buried in 1920 was not likely mine either.

I think I'll try NZ forum to see if anyone can find a marriage there.  A 17 year old girlfriend could send a wife with children fleeing back to her mother!

Thanks again!

Thanks, ROSIE99.  I see what you mean!  I also see that Mrs K's age could not be read as 33.
Off in search of Adelaide marriage now!

ROSIE99 - it sounds like you are able to read the passenger list that you were commenting upon.
Are you able to see KENDALL rather than KANDELL when you look at it
and Are you able to see 33 rather than 36 as the age of Mrs K?  I've seen both of these transcription errors before!
Thanks.

Thank you, again, CANDO, for the Passenger list entry.  I was going to say it is very possible due to age and occupation and the fact the transcriptions are not always accurate and ROSIE99 has confirmed my thoughts - thank you to ROSIE99 as well!!
I suspect this is my JW with new wife, Mary, which would suggest a marriage in Adelaide.  I'm not sure how easy it would have been to divorce with only one signature or how easy it might have been to conveniently leave out the first marriage as it had been in New Zealand.

I have just realised that a number of responses yesterday were from MAJM. I do apologise!  Thank you very much for your contributions.  You said that you had not found mention of a divorce in Australia.  I think I should now focus on an Adelaide marriage.

Again, thanks to all of you who have posted to this string!
