Durham / Cycling Club
« on: Monday 05 February 18 15:12 GMT (UK)  »
My friend has a small bugle with the inscription West Stanley Cycling Club.  There is no date inscribed.  It was made by Woods and Co who were musical instrument manufactures situated in Westgate Road Newcastle upon Tyne  I am unable to find any reference to the cycling club as to when it was in existence.  I have quite a lot of information about Woods and Co but would like to know if anyone has ever heard of the cycling club in West Stanley.

Eunice Wheatley b. 1788 in Lanchester, Durham married first husband William Simpson in All Saints Lanchester in 1806. William died and she remarried John Richardson from Tanfield in 1843 at St Nicholas Church Newcastle upon Tyne. They both returned to Greencroft area and Eunice died 1st March 1868 at High Kyo. I am unable to find where she is buried. Thanks

Who was Alderman Wood? He had a school named after him which was Stanley Grammer School and is currently Tanfield School. What connection did Alderman Wood have to this school? Any information would be great thanks :)

Durham / Re: SHARP and JAMES, Lanchester.

I read your request earlier today and found it very interesting.  Samuel was a journeyman cordwainer in Lanchester living with the Sharp(e) family. Later this afternoon I was searching on Durham Record Office www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice for something totally unrelated and came across Samuel James and George Sharp in relation to land in Lanchester under the title " Copyhold land at Summerhill purchased by John Fawcett in 1880.  It mentions George Sharp and Samuel James ref D/X 1207/1/433. Makes interesting reading.

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Tanfield - William Simpson

I have found some more information for you regarding your Simpson's.  Rev Joseph Simpson lived in Tanfield Hall from 1790 until 1830 which was also the vicarage and was suceeded by his son Rev William Simpson.  It was also a Boarding Academy and in 1789 Joseph was nominated Master of the School.  The school closed in 1860. I have also found a burial that may be William.  "John William Simpson Tanfield Parsonage buried 4th May 1857 62 years."  There is a Margaret Simpson who died 29th November 1861 aged 53 years at the time resided in Newcastle but was buried in Tanfield.
