Well spotted I never found that one!
It all seems to be tying in and that gives us 2 more generations further back plus all the siblings of the 2nd Anthony and our William - I think when I did my original trawl of the IGI I had quite a few families who will turn out to be the siblings.
Thank goodness for families who stayed in 1 place!!!
I am on the track of the earliest anthony now as I found quite a lot of Jameses going back further so it would be nice to track another generation! Also will look at wives of the 2 Anthony's - I have not really had any luck with Elizabeth Portlock

Hi again ,
I've been looking through batch numbers again and have come across what looks like William's baptism on5th Jan 1800 with parents Anthony and Mary when I looked up other children with the same parents I found what seemed to be 2 lots of Anthony and Marys one (lets call him Tony for identification!) with a family of  John 1797, "our" William 1800,George 1807,Hester 1805  this ties in with an IGI entry of a marriage between Anthony James and Mary Williams 31.10.1796 in CK - possibly this could be the Anthony and his son George you found in the census
Looking on through the IGI the "other" Anthony (Ant for short !)and Mary had children  John 1755,Joseph1757,Thomas 1759,Mary 1761,Susanna 1764,George 1767,Anthony 1769,and William 1772 I reckon their Anthony is "Tony"
There is also rahter conveniently a marriage 2nd dec 1754 between Anthony James and Mary Riddell
also found a birth of a daughter to Susannah James - no father of a daughter Mary 1785
I think this may well be our lot which would definitely take us further back!
Have a look on IGI when you have time and let me know what you think

:D brilliant news that will really be helpful
I will look up if I have anything from the batch numbers on Anthony James and let you know
If it turns out to be Anna Maria married to David Dodgson
then she did very well for herself indeed as he later became General Sir David Scott Dodgson. I have loads on him and children and grandchildren but just need the confirmation that it was Anna Maria James he married in 1851 Bengal according to IGI unfortunately the marriage record and the childrens birth records also in India do not record her maiden name
I am hoping to contact someone via the Dodgson family website to confirm if it is in fact the correct Anna Maria
will let you know

I just rooted out the copies of the marriage certs of Edwin and David and lo and behold there is an Emma James as a witness which would confirm the Sarah Simmonds theory as her eldest james child was emma! hoorah!

Yes I read about the batch numbers in a family tree magazine - its a brilliant trick! also if you alter the prefix from c for christenings to m for marriage you can get those batches too!
I'm trying to trace anna maria do you have anything on her?
if not my current theory is that she married a david Dodgson who was in the army as the only time I can find an Anna M with her birth year and place in the census collection is in 1871 living in London married to a guy who seems to have travelled the world which would explain her disappearance from other data that is unless you have a record of a death but i haven't tracked one down yet
happy hunting

Just looked up the 1861 census as I hadn't twigged the identity of Esther Robinson -  doh!
the Robinsons were at 118 Blind lane and Sarah James widow and son John were at 117!

Hi there,
I am also researching the James family for my husband David Dwyer
I have managed to find out a few things which may help
firstly I looked up all children of William and Elizabeth using the IGI and batch numbers ( a great trick I learned recently) This recorded Anna Maria 1826, Esther 1829,George 1830,Henry 1833,Edwin 1835,David 1838,Mary ann 1841 the last child recorded was Charles baptised in 1843 who also died 27.12. 1843.
Then I looked up batch numbers of marriages in Charlton Kings and as well as the marriage of William and Elizabeth Portlock in 1821 found a record of a marriage between a William James and Sarah Simmonds on 6th April 1846 after lots of checking and cross referencing to match up the families I found via the batch numbers I came to the conclusion that this was our William remarrying I have the reference to send for the certificate if you want to check it out but the reason i think it's right is that for some reason there is no William in the 1851 census but our David and sister Mary Ann can be found living with a woman called Sarah James who has 2 more children Emma born 1846 and John born 1849  Sarah is not listed as a widow but as married - I tracked her further on via the census and William doesn't reappear and by 1861 she is classed as widowed so I can only guess that William died some time after the conception of John in 1848/9 and definitely before 1861.
I looked up Sarah Smmonds via her own birth details and her son Thomas Simmonds who was also living with her in 1851 - I think I found them in 1841 and If i'm right she was previously married to a Matthew Simmonds with 7 children Ann, Samuel,Matthew,Thomas,Elizabeth,Caroline and Keziah
I checked them out in 1851 whilst she was in Charlton Kings and they (except for thomas)were living with grandparents Thomas and Ann Butler in Cheltenham and neither parent was there so I'm surmising that this was her family that her maiden name was Sarah Butler!!!!!!!!
By looking up the batch numbers i have worked out a couple of the marriages of the children too
I hope this helps - i'm guessing that you might be a relative that my husband has been corresponding with ref the family tree!
Please get in touch I would love to hear what you think of my theories!
regards Debbie
