Family History Beginners Board / Re: Brotherton/Thirsk
« on: Saturday 15 February 14 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
Dear hel55fab
I have been doing the family tree a while now and seem to be slowing down with it so it was fantastic to see this posting.
Do you know anything about Frank?, did your Grandfather talk about him?. I would love to know what he looked like or if there are any stories about the short time he was Walter's step father.
I have info that John Wilson Thirsk b1882 d 1912 in Grimsby (according to the Kennedy family tree on Ancestory) but was living in Hull at the time of the 1911 census. His father was also John Wilson and mother Jane Graham.
I know that Frank and Ethel had another 5 children: Hilda, Frank B, William, Doris and Lilian. Did you ever meet any of them as your great Aunts (I think the two boys maybe died as I cant find any records for them)
I also think Ethel married again to a Hall, as you say lots of husbands!
It would be lovely to hear from you again.
kind regards - Elaine
We are going to visits Frank's grave in Flanders at Easter

Dear Bill Symons - and anyone else who remembers Hodgson Street
i dont suppose you have any photos of Ivy Cottages, or Hodgson Street? Ive tried the HCC sites for pics , but they never work or are under construction.
My great grandmas brother, my great great uncle Frank Brotherton, lived there at no 4 with his family according to the 1911 census with Ethel Thirsk who he married and her son Walter Thirsk, and his children Hilda and Frank Brotherton.
Frank was killed in WW1 East Yorks regiment and is buried in Flanders.
I know there is quite a gap to when you lived there but did you hear of any stories of people who had lived there before when you were a child?
thankyou if you can help, much appreciated
Elaine

After looking at the marriage certificate and some other info I have now found out that Ethel Thirsk was in fact born as Ethel Cotton asuggested above and married a John Thirsk. They had Walter, and then they parted for whatever reasons and Hilda May and Frank B were born. In the 1911 census they were living with Frank Brotherton.  They then went on to have 3 more children: William H, Doris and Liliam. They got married in 1914. Lilian who was born in 1916 probably never saw her father. I am not sure of the next part yet - are there living relatives? Walter Thirsk certainly has them, they are on Ancestry, but are there any Brothertons out there? :)

Hello
I am from the Brotherton side!
Louie was my great grandma too. Her brother Frank was killed in Flanders 1918 29 Sept - Louies birthday - I have visited the grave.
I am trying to find out if there are living relatives of Frank, as he married an Ethel Cotton in 1914 but in the 1911 census was already living with her and three children, Walter Thirsk, Hilda May and Frank B. I think they had more children William H, Doris and Lilian.
Back to Lavinia - I noticed from the 1911 census that Isabella was listed as 'housekeeper', although I understand that they married in 1905? interestingly the eldest child at the time of the census was called Lavinia, presumaby named after her mother? My sister has pictures on ancestory of Louie and Ada Brotherton, although we are short of any other photos. We also wondered what happened to the Bell children, as they lost both their parents.
hope this helps
Elaine

Hi Roger
Thank you so much, this is very helpful and gives me a little more to go on . I can now start to track the reserve movements prior to his being wounded and also may be get into the Hull Daily Mail archives.
Thanks again
Elaine :)

Thank you to both of you for replying to me.
This has now put me in a slightly different but interesting direction with regards to his initial signing up as I had thought that he was an original Hull Pal. I have a copy of his medal card which says 1914/15 which does suggest as you say that after his injuries he was then moved to East Yorks 10th. His service records are not on Ancestory so may be in the destroyed ones. I think that he died at  Ploegsteert and so will investigate further. Thank you for site details very interesting.
thank you again
Elaine :)

my GG Uncle Frank died on 29 Sept 1918 and is buried at Underhill Farm Cemetary in Belgium - I have just been for a visit.
I am trying to find out all I can about him as I dont even have a picture! I have just bought Hull Pals and The Trench so think I should be able to trace his steps.
He married an Ethel Thirsk in 1914 who according to the 1911 census was living with Frank with 3 children, possibly his, as the youngest was called Frank B!
Any help with the military side of things much appreciated. Someone told me that Wenlock Barracks have records - is this right?
thank you all
Elaine

Barbara
I forgot to mention just as a point of interest. My mum is called Rosalie Johnson and I see you have a very similar name on your wall! What a strange coincidence! :)
