Family History Beginners Board / Re: Family Book
« on: Thursday 02 November 23 11:45 GMT (UK)  »
Just an update on the book enquiry.  The Rushden Museum have been very keen to help but have not turned up any Bicks at Rushden House.  However I have been doing some digging and have turned up the same child as Kloumann.  According to local Baptism records Edward William Bick was born in 1878 and baptised 17 March 1878 the son of John and Sarah Bick.  My problem now is that my Sarah died in 1874 and by the time of Edward's baptism John had remarried.  This time to Mary Harris.  They had a daughter Amy in 1877 and there is no recorded birth after that.  SO, - Edward William Bick is not a member of my Bick line.  This begs the question "How did my family come by the book?" I can find no records of Edward William Bick in census records, or birth registration to discover what became of him.
Any ideas?

Thank you all for the interest you have shown in my project.  I have looked up the website recommended by Kloumann and sent an enquiry to the Rushden Museum by email.  I now await a response.  I will update when/if I receive any information.

I am in possession of a handsome leather bound book about polar exploration.  I inherited it from my mother and in the front it is inscribed "Edward William Bick, Rushden House, March 26th 1879."
Edward (His actual name was William Edward) was my Mother's great uncle and he would have been 16 in the year in question. (born 1863). I have been trying to find Rushden House without success.  I thought it might have been a school prize and a very handsome prize it would have been, but that might explain the mistake with the order of his name.  The family would not be likely to make such a mistake.  Any suggestions?

My Father served with 42RTR and was captured in North Africa In June 1942.  I have a history of the regiment and some of the war diary.  Give me a few days and I'll get back with more.

Just a final postscript to this sad story.  I did track down the person responsible for the disposal of all the furnishings rendered redundant due to the modernisation of the church.  He has since moved on and now lives in Leicester.  He did nevertheless offer to check such records as he still had and get back to me.
I have never heard from him since.
The present incumbent has no records at all.
Search now abandoned.

Thank you all for your patient advice and support.

It's never a waste of time and always worth asking.  You sometimes discover the unexpected.  Always willing to help.

13th/18th Hussars were a regular cavalry regiment whereas 42RTR was raised at the beginning of the war as part of the East Surrey Regiment from a territorial unit at Clapham Junction.  No connection I'm afraid.

Just a brief conclusion to my research of the troop convoy.  The four vessels I mentioned previously were joined in Suez by a further two later the same day but they were from an earlier 'slow' section of the same convoy that left UK four days prior to your Grandfather's embarkation.  So we are left with the four vessels I mentioned as his possible transport.  All six ships were carrying a total of 13,786 troops but I cannot find any record of the regiments or units they were carrying or in which vessel. One small piece of information I unearthed is the fact that 'Georgic' embarked her troops in the Clyde whereas the other three embarked in Liverpool.  Interesting perhaps but unless you have any idea where he embarked it won't help.
Good luck with the rest of your research.

There's an outside chance that the relevant war diary will mention it when describing the movement of his unit.  I was lucky in that it was in my father's case when he sailed for North Africa in 1941, but I understand that this was a rare exception.  Otherwise I don't know of any other record than perhaps a reminiscence by another member of the unit.  I have a fairly comprehensive account of that and other troop convoys in a very good book.  I'll give it some further study and will post if I come up with anything more.
