Roxburghshire / Re: Whitaugh Armstrongs
« on: Tuesday 28 July 20 11:27 BST (UK)  »
I have found this thread rather a long time after it was written and wonder if anyone is still active, please?

I have found Francis Armstrong of Whitehaugh (living 1714) who married in 1683 to Julian, dau. of Henry/Harie Ker of Lintoun and they apparently had a son called Francis Armstrong who was living 1706 and 1714.

I cannot find any decent pedigree for the Armstrongs of Whithaugh and so wonder if anyone can help me to place the above-mentioned individuals, please?

Many thanks,
Caspar

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Sylvester Nethersole of Barham
« on: Monday 30 December 19 13:04 GMT (UK)  »
So my immediate connection is William Nethersole who was buried at St. Margaret's, Canterbury before 1761. He was a lieutenant of the marines and was supposedly from the Charing branch. He married 24/10/1722 to Frances, dau. of Thomas Pierce of Hansletts and heir of her brother. They had at least 4 sons and 3 daughters.

Now it is possible that the above William was the son of another William Nethersole, gent., of Charing who was born c.1670 and died 1731 and was buried at Charing. He married in 1694 at Charing to Philadelphia (1673-1717), dau. of Christopher Dering of Wickins who was a cadet of the Dering family of Surrenden. I have 6 sons from this marriage (including one named Heneage Nethersole who died a baby in 1716) plus 2 possible daughters, all apparently baptised at Charing.

I do hope that the above details will help and look forward to hearing more.

You might also be able to help with more substantive evidence for the connections with the Barham branch to the main family.

Many thanks,
Caspar

Hi Jeremy & Matt,

I'm a bit late for Christmas, so wishing you both a very successful 2020.

I am a bit of a genealogical butterfly and so have been off down other avenues, however I am still keen to get these Nethersoles straight.

I have built quite a Nethersole pedigree, but I have several portions that I am unsure about how to connect and unsure about the evidence to join them (although they clearly should join).

My link is via the Nethersoles of Charing in Kent, but just how is still unclear and how they then join to the main line at Wimingswold & Barham.

I shall look forward to hearing more.

Many thanks,
Caspar

Kent / Re: Nethersole House :
« on: Tuesday 25 June 19 22:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi Iain,

Don't know if you are still pursuing Nethersole House, but Google has brought me here whilst researching the Nethersole family in Kent.

They had a property called Nethersole House at Womensworld/Barham which you have already mentioned: https://www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-kent/vol9/pp262-266

There was also a branch of the family living at Charing who probably connect, although I have yet to find the link. I have a William Nethersole, gent. who was born circa 1679 and was buried at Charing 19/2/1731. He married in 1694 at Charing, Philadelphia Dering (daughter of Christopher Dering of Wickins, descended from the Surrenden family). They had:

1/ John Nethersole, b.c.1696 or c.1716 and died 1749 and buried at Charing
2/ Elizabeth Nethersole, baptised 1705 at Charing
3/ Edward Nethersole, baptised 1707 at Charing
4/ George Nethersole, baptised 1711 at Charing
5/ Heneage Nethersole, baptised 1716 at Charing and buried 1716 at Charing
6/ Mary Nethersole (uncertain is she was actually their daughter, or someone else's) who married 1735 at Charing to John Burges

Now next I have to jump to 1722 when William Nethersole married Frances Peirce at St. Margaret's, Canterbury. William was supposed to be of Charing and was a Lieutenant in the Marines. They had:

1/ Frances (d.1772) who married Rev. Andrew Portal, MA, Vicar of St. Helen's, Abingdon
2/ Elizabeth (bapt.1723 at Faversham, d.1758) who married 1748 at St. George's Chapel, Mayfair, Abraham Portal (brother of Rev. Andrew, above), who was of Ludgate Hill, London and was a goldsmith and author. After her death he remarried.
3/ William Nethersole, gent. (bapt.1730 at Faversham) - he was a wax & tallow chandler in The Strand in 1758. He married Mary Magdalen Portal (sister of Rev. Andrew and of Abraham Portal, as above). They had 4 sons and 3 daughters and may well have Nethersole descendants still living today.
4/ Thomas Nethersole (bapt.1725 at Faversham, died 1787) - he was a grocer in Soho
5/ Richard Nethersole (d.c.1774) - he was also a grocer, probably in business with his brother, Thomas. He married 1768 Sarah Hart and they had a son and 3 daughters
6/ Susanna who married 1767 John Edkins of Hampstead and late of St. Giles-in-the-Fields, grocer and had a son and daughter

I can add a little to the genealogy here, but I hope I am showing firstly that there were at least two houses in Kent called Nethersole House and secondly that a family of that name were certainly responsible for one of them (at Womenswold), and quite probably for the second (at Charing) and were quite likely related to one another.

Anyway I hope the above proves of interest and if anyone else out there is looking at the name of Nethersole then I would encourage them to post here.

Many thanks,
Caspar

Fascinating to read this will extract as I am currently building a pedigree for Nethersole and I have that Sylvester (dau. of Thomas Ladd of Barham) married a Nethersole (slight confusion as to which one, but I think Vincent as his 2nd wife) and had:

1/ John Nethersole (1546-1627) who m. 1581 Peregryne Wylforde of Nonnington
2/ Alexander Netherole (living 1596)
3/ Christopher Nethersole, gent., of Dover (will 1596, pr.1597)
4/ Vyncent Nethersole of Wimingswould (living 1596) who m. Elizabeth Denne of Kingston
5/ Afra or Aphra who m. 1584 Francis Rickarde, gent. of Barham and/or Postling
6/ Amye who m. 1576 Andrew Smythest of Buckland
7/ Mary who m. Thomas Mundye
8/ Sara who m. Francis Burden, gent. of Dover

I also have a Steven Nethersole (who I suspect is a cousin of the above children, but I am not sure how) who m. 1583 at Barham Elizabeth Longe.

I can take this Nethersole pedigree backwards and forwards in time and should be pleased to compare notes if you are on the same journey.

Many thanks,
Caspar

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: James Wainwright - father of 15 children 1700's ?

Also following on from Rabuser's post, Daniel Rooke had a son Daniel Rooke baptised as St. Mary's Barnsley 18/4/1689. There is another entry for a baptism on 6/3/1712 for another Daniel Rooke, also son of a Daniel Rooke, also at St. Mary's, Barnsley.

I see John Senior Rooke baptised 9/4/1758 at Silkstone, son of William Rooke, and then 13/4/1782 married at York to Mary Walker, and then buried 20/9/1835 at Dronfield, Derbyshire.

I also see a John Senior Rooke married at St. Mary, Lambeth to Eliza Susanna Collins on 26/7/1813 and then died in 1846 at Bethnal Green.

I see Richard Ludlam Rooke baptised 24/3/1823 at St. Peter's, Leeds, son of Edward & Elizabeth Rooke, and then living with his parents at the 1851 census and then with his siblings at Potter Newton at the 1871 census. Confusingly I see a death of a Richard Ludlam Rooke in Leeds in 1838, so I presume the name was used more than once.

Presumably this is all familiar, but I do wonder about how or if Daniel connects to Olive Wainwright who married John Rooke? And to the Olive Wainwright of the previous generation who married Thomas Senier/Senyar/Senior?

I hope there is more to share.

Thank you very much for your post - a great help.

I am attaching a (very much) work-in-progress pedigree for this family in the hope that it will produce more comment and contribution. I must emphasise that work-in-progress means subject to confirmation and change, so please don't take it as gospel, just a good guide at the moment.

Also for the Parish Records for Darfield please see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Darfield and scroll down to the bottom.

Many thanks,
Caspar

London and Middlesex / Re: Doughty Robert of London
« on: Monday 06 March 17 00:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have just stumbled on this exchange.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=040-d181&cid=-1&Gsm=2008-06-18#-1 shows a marriage between George Martyn and Ann Doughty, widow in 1720. Lands metioned are in Oddington in Gloucestershire. I believe that this George's will is dated 12th April 1737, and proved 9th February 1739 (I have a copy). In it he mentions sons George and Francis and his "dear wife" Ann. He makes his son George and his nephew William Selwyn joint Executors of his will.

Now I believe that this George (the elder) is also mentioned at http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=66431 where it says he was a skinner and citizen of London and that he bought Oddington in 1711.

Now I also conjecture that George Martyn the elder had his two sons by an earlier wife and I think that George Martyn the younger (and designated as of Oddington) married Cary Cave Malcher before 1716, daughter of Richard Malcher of St. Lawrence Jewry, London (whose will is dated 1716 and his daughter Cary Cave is mentioned as already married to George Martyn). This younger George died 8th January 1740 leaving co-heiresses.

Does anyone have any thoughts about these suggestions, please?

Many thanks,
Caspar
