Occupation Interests / Re: Ships crew who served passengers?

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the information.  I did not realize there were different classes of waiters and stewards.  Now I think about this, it makes good sense.  I would guess then, for English g-grandmother to come in contact with Swedish g-grandfather a number of times (enough to make a "spark"), he would probably be a cabin attendant or a deck attendant of some kind.

The time period is 1863/64.  They marry in Sydney, Australia in 1865.  Family story says they met on ship.  Nothing to prove it so far.

Hello,

Thanks for giving this a try.  Would appreciate any more ideas you might come up with.  This is my first time on RootsChat.  I love the idea of so many "heads" working on one problem.

Hi,
sorry there was nothing new for you. I was on the wrong track with the death of an Elizabeth cessford in 1894. I wonder who she belonged to? Not that it matters you have got everything well covered.
I'll give it some more thought later after I feed the ravenous hordes -me and he in shed :)

Hi Stan,

I had originally put my question in Northumberland Resources - obviously not where it belonged, so redid the question in "Northumberland".   Now the person who looks after RootsChat moved it to Northumberland Look-Ups.

Thanks for noticing the second thread

I obtained the birth record for the William Deas shown as "wife's brother" - father Adam Deas and Isabella Taylor.  But they did not marry until 1838, 5 years after Elizabeth was born and she does not appear with them on the 1841 Census.

The only thing I can think of is, Isabella Taylor had Elizabeth out of wedlock and THEN married Adam, but again, where is Elizabeth in the 1841 Census.

Birth records for all the children shows Elizabeth Deas as the mother.  Joseph Sessford died in 1904 and Elizabeth died in 1905.

I have just discovered Elizabeth Deas had first daughter Margaret Jane Wilkinson Dees 29 August 1854 out of wedlock.  Certificate is on the way from England.  So marriage to Joseph Sessford would be after this date.  I am honestly beginning to think they did not marry at all.

Thanks for your interest and your input.  Appreciated very much.  This is my "going around in a circle puzzle".
Regards,

Northumberland / DEAS surname in Newcastle

Looking for parents of Elizabeth Deas - born about 1833 in Newcastle.  About 1854 she married Joseph Sessford (Cessford).  Marriage is not registered in England/Wales records.  Currently searching Church Records of Northumberland & Durham on-line at familysearch.org website.  So far no luck.

There appear to be several Deas/Dees families in Newcastle, but I cannot place Elizabeth within any family at the moment.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Hi again,
You are right, impossible job for a 7 year old, so the age in that census is obviously incorrect.  Will have a fresh look at this tomorrow.

Thanks for your observations and help.

Hello keyboard86,

Certainly appreciate you giving this problem some thought.  I have on my own in this search for a long time.  Yesterday, my cousin suggested I try RootsChat and ask for some help.

In the 1861 Census - I agonized over this "7" for a long time until I looked down the page at a Robert Ranson, Lodger, aged "17".  The number is written exactly the same.  Also, did not find William Deas in the 1871 Census, aged 17.

I am getting more committed to Elizabeth Deas being an "out of wedlock" child.  Possibly to Isabella Taylor, who would have been aged about 17 years when Elizabeth was born. Then Isabella Taylor married Adam Deas 28 June 1838, both parties stating they were of "full age".  From that point on, daughter Elizabeth used the name Deas.

Its funny thought, Adam Deas and Isabella Taylor are on the 1841 Census with a daughter Isabella Deas aged 11mths, but again NO ELIZABETH.

I just keep going around in circles and ending back with my Elizabeth Deas and no parents. Appreciate your interest and glad of your help.

:)  Thanks Keyboard 86.  I thought this William might be the answer as well, especially with a daughter Elizabeth, aged 8.  However, I have a snag.......

In the 1861 Census for Joseph Sessford and family there is a William Deas, aged 7, Puddler, "wife's brother".  Sent for birth record and he is the son of Adam Deas and Isabella Taylor.  However, Adam and his wife Isabella Taylor were not married until FIVE YEARS after Elizabeth Deas was born.

I cannot find another Deas family with a daughter Elizabeth?

Occupation Interests / Ships crew who served passengers?
« on: Tuesday 08 March 11 01:33 GMT (UK)  »
What would they call crewmen who worked with the passengers on deck?  My great-grandfather (ships crew) from Sweden met my great-grandmother (passenger) while on a voyage from London to Australia.  I can only think of waiters and stewards.  Can anyone tell me if there were "other" crew occupations above decks?  Would appreciate any suggestions.
