Hello everyone. Hope you all had a good Xmas and New year. Looking at the news here in sunny New Zealand, they tell me it has been a bit cold over there. Hope it didn't get to bad where you were.

I am trying to find details on someone that once lived in Marshfield, Gloucestershire. Lived just before registration records (about 1815) so need to look through earlier sources. Can anyone tell me a good site, please?

Well, many thanks everyone. That will help.

I will now look for the family using the usual methods.

Again, thanks.

Well, I received the marriage certificate copy. Unfortunately, although it helped with my research (I found out William had been previously married) it didn't help much with this inquiry. I also took the opportunity to look at the "Intention to marry" notice.

What I had been hoping for was that Esther would have been under the age of 21 which would have required the consent of her father. She was 22 which meant the name of the father was not recorded. She had been resident in the district for 16 months prior to Sep. 1877.

So I take it the consensus is that she was born in Marshfield, Gloucester. Is that right?

There is an Esther Jeffries, aged 4 on the 1861 in Dymock Ryland, Gloucestershire. Father was a James, ag lab, aged 36, widower:

Yes, thank you. I suspect that is the right one. Maybe.

There are no Esther Jeffries in the GRO birth index for 1855. Is this perhaps the correct birth entry for Esther?

JEFFRIES Esther Maria     Birmingham  6d 200 Mar 1854 qtr

If you can tell us more about Esther (ie where and when she married and/or, for example, whether she had any other names) we may be able to work back and provide an answer. You must have, at least, some of this information to order the marriage certificate.

There are, of course, several possible alternative spellings for JEFFRIES which we may need to consider.

I do not think that is her. Doesn't the 6d indicate 6 days old? Anyhow, I do not believe she had more than one given name.

The marriage is recorded here on the Births, Deaths and marriages index. Just what is on the certificate is unknown but N.Z. certificates give more information than English ones. The marriage is one of the two absolutes I have. The other is a monument inscription on her grave. For some unknown reason, BDM here does not have a record of her death. I think there may be a name problem there (with the information given at the time of death). However, she was buried as Esther Baker which shows she did not re-marry (and so did not change her name).

I expect the certificate will clear this up.

Her name was Esther Baker (nee Jeffries). There are no siblings.

I have ordered the marriage certificate. That may show the parents name(s). It will take about two weeks to arrive so I had better put this on hold for now.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi

Quote
as the only piece of information I have, the place name where he came from

You also have his name and presumably some idea of when he was born

If you can post the info - we may be able to find the answer for you

There is/was a Marchfield in Gloucestershire and one in Cheshire

There is/was a Marshfield in Gloucester
No, I am afraid I don't. The reference came about through some notes I found on his daughter. She died in New Zealand but I do not know where she was born (although I know when, 1855). Her father was described as "Mr. Jeffries from March-field". Because of the settlement pattern in N.Z. I assume her father came from the England but even that is just a guess. I suspect he would have been born about 1835. I really need some where to start and first thing I need is where to look and for that I need to know where March-field is.

Ancestor of mine has, as the only piece of information I have, the place name where he came from, which is March-field or Marchfield. Tried to find this with Google but found no reference. However, I suspect the name may have changed over the years or possibly it is not a place name but a parish or similar?

Has anyone ever heard of March-field?
