Hi RustyNuts,

That would be fantastic! Unfortunately, I have a very blurred image of the marriage certificate as well, and am unable to read the addresses or witness names clearly.

It looks like Joseph's address was Old Park.

The marriage is listed in the Bristol Non-Conformist Church Records 1777 - 1936 as Josephus Johnson and Anna Keller. I don't know if that helps?!

Thank you for pointing that out, rosie99. I had not realised.

Firstly, thanks, Annette for the suggestion. While I know Ann's family was Catholic I have never thought to look specifically for Catholic records!

Regarding his marriage and father's occupation, all of those records are here :https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/114130536/person/260131297604/gallery
Joseph was a tailor. The last record mentioning him that I have seen is Philip's birth. Afterwards he disappears. This is another mystery for me as Philp's marriage certificate from 1881 gives "Joseph Thomas Johnson" as his father and does not list Joseph as deceased at that time... so where was he?

I think Patrick John Johnson was a mariner. You can take a look at the doc at the address above... the handwriting is hard to read but I think it says mariner.

Thanks all for your thoughts on the matter!

Hi everyone,

I am hoping someone here is interested in helping me uncover a mystery that has been annoying me for years...

I am trying to trace my family in Bristol, but have hit a wall in the mid-1800s. My ancestor born then was Philip Johnson (birth records: Johnson, Philip Hugh, Bristol, vol.6a, page 48). Looking at birth and marriage records, as well as censuses, I know that his parents were Joseph Thomas Johnson (b. circa1820) and Ann Keller (b. circa1820). I know that Ann's mother was Irish, so although I have not been able to go any further back than Ann's parents, I know that I probably can't due to a lack of records.

However, it perplexes me that I cannot find Joseph Johnson's parents! I've been research my family tree for almost a decade and still haven't found anything that takes me back a generation (aside from the name of Joseph's father - Patrick Johnson). If you're keen to help me out I'd really appreciate it!

Here's a link to JT Johnson in my tree: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/114130536/person/260131297604/story
I have placed documents in the gallery section of his profile.

Many thanks,
Zoe

Thanks, I was just about to mention the death of Hannah in 1819.

I think John and Susy is the best lead so far :)

Thanks, I really appreciate the help!

This has been a brick wall in my research for quite some time!

Hi,

I've been looking for the names of the parents of two of my ancestors.

One is William Haigh, born around 1797 in Stainland, Yorkshire. I suspect that his father is Joseph Haigh, listed in the 1841 census alongside William (spelt Willm). However, I have not been able to find a record of William's birth or his marriage to wife Hannah.

Hannah, William's wife, is the other person whose birth I am trying to trace. The "Benjn" Lumb listed with the family in 1841 appears again with the family in later censuses, always listed as either William's brother-in-law, or Hannah's brother when she is a widow and head of the household. Using the name Hannah Lumb has not found me any conclusive results.

Here's a brief summary of the 1841 census:

Place: Halifax
Residence Note: Fox Stones
Joseph Haigh age 74-78
Willm Haigh age 40-44
Hannah Haigh age 25-29
Joseph Haigh age 4
Rebecca Haigh age 1
Benjn Lumb age 30-34
All household members born in Yorkshire.

If anyone can help me trace the parents of William and Hannah I'd greatly appreciate it.

Zoe

Somerset / Re: Dabige family in Somerset (Langport)

Hi Mary,

That's amazing that you found Spanish ancestry in your DNA.

I unfortunately only have information on Frances Dabige from online. I spoke to Rose Figgins at the Somerset and Dorset family History Society, as I saw a post from her online regarding Frances' Spanish heritage. She confirmed the story of Frances being a Spanish governess.

I asked Rose to check the SDFHS's database, but she didn't find any new info, only the marriage of John and Frances on 27/6/1796 and her burial on 11/8/1838, aged 64. The only similar surname she could find to Dabige was a marriage 150 years earlier of a female 'Dabbidge'.  No births, burials, wills or anything using a wild card with 'Dab*' with a surname even remotely linked.

The original information that I found that lead me to Rose on http://butleigh.org/butleighpeople/ButleighPeopleD.html regarding Frances says: "Elizabeth Payne from Langport was the daughter of John Payne, tailor, and Frances Dabige. The family story is that Frances Dabige was a Spanish governess with whom John Payne eloped only to be ostracised by his family (info courtesy Rose Figgins)."

Here's Frances in my online tree: http://wthrscrtwrght.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=wthrscrtwrght&view=0&pid=578&ver=63 (If you need a password, it is "Tilly").

Please let me know if you come across any other information regarding Frances' heritage.

Kind regards,
Zoe
