Thank you Forester. The link did work. Wonderful to find him at last, especially as I've had the details of my other grandad for some time now. I don't understand why I'm not getting a result from Ancestry - I've just tried it again, and still nothing. I do appreciate all your help. The war diaries are fascinating.

Kind regards
Julie

Thank you Ady for all your help.

I have looked on Ancestry for grandad's medal card, but nothing comes up for him. I understand that some of the records did not survive the second world war, so perhaps his were amongst those that were destroyed.

Thanks again
Julie

Thank you for your reply Ady. That is very helpful.

Have you found grandad somewhere to see that he was an Acting Corporal? Is there a website I can look at or a book I can buy? In the diary that Forester recommended, there is frequent mention of the battalion being split into four groups - A, B, C and D - and I was wondering if I could find out which one he was in.

This is getting more and more interesting!

Regards
Julie

Thank you for your replies.

Grandad was Arthur William Smith, regiment number 420549. He was born 15 April 1897 (though he lied about his age and gave the year as 1896). I have looked for him on Ancestry, but did not get any matches for him. I have his original Demobilization Certificate and a standard postcard (where set phrases were crossed out) he sent my grandmother from the front. I remember him telling me he went to France, but he never mentioned Gallipoli and/or Egypt!

Thanks again
Julie

World War One / 10th London Regiment

Can anyone please help me find information regarding the 10th London Regiment? My grandfather served in the "Shiney 10th" from 8 August 1914 to 22 March 1919. I have a group photo including him at Redhill, where I understand they trained. A Southern Command School of Instruction report states his Corps was "2/10 London". Do you know of any way that I can trace where he served during World War 1?

Kind regards
Julie
