P.S. They were all born in Kent.

Armagh / John Mcauley - Lurgan

Hello.

Just wondering whether anyone might be able to hep me find a birth record and/or any other details re parents etc for one of my ancestors.

I am looking for John McAuley (sometimes spelt McAulay). I can find him in the England census from 1881 onwards when he resides in Gillingham, Kent.  Each census suggests he was born in Lurgan around around 1846. Although the 1911 census suggest about 1856.

In 1873 he is in Brompton Barracks in Kent (a private in the 10th Foot) and marries Jane Adams (previously Richards). On the marriage certificate his father's name is noted as Richard McAuley (Labourer). They are married in a Catholic church.

He is 27 on the marriage certificate. They go on to have about 7 (that I know of) children and I can list their names if it helps.

I can't find him on any England census before 1881 - although the variations on the spelling of his surname make him hard to find (for me anyway!).

Any help would be amazing.

Thank you.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Hollister - Stratton
« on: Friday 01 June 12 18:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to go further with one of my 'branches'.

Have reached a Mary Hollister who was (according to census info I have found for her)  born in about 1801 in Stratton. In 1821 she married a William New (the marriage was registered in Highworth).  In 1841 and 1851 she lived in Stanton Fitzwarren.  Then in 1861, 1871 and 1881 she is in Stratton St Margaret.

Mary and William had children: Joseph, Eliza, Henry, Eleanor, Jane, John and Edward.

Can anyone find a Birth or Death record for her please?

Thank you

Pretty much anything is possible.  The groom himself went on to have three families accross the country after his first marriage and we don't know what happened to the first wife.

He was probably a proficient liar - I've got to the point where I am even a bit suspicious about his real name!

Different census give different places of birth for the groom so it is difficult to trace his family at the moment and his name is not unusual (George Sinclair).  The only thing we have to go re his father is the marriage certificate.

I have put other posts on here in the past about George but I am not sure how to share the link here.

Thanks everyone - that's really useful.

Just wondered whether it could help narrow down the search but it appears probably not.

Thanks again.

Grrr - Sorry!  When I posted the above the middle of the message disappeared. Double grrr.

So here it is again.....

I have a marriage certificate from 1900 in which the groom's father is noted as being of 'independent means'.  The grooms father is the elusive person.

Just wondered if anyone might know what this phrase could have meant in 1900 - self employed or rich enough not to work perhaps?

Would it have had any bearing on his social class?  Can I, for example, rule out families in earlier census with similar names with trades etc?
