Thanks to everyone for the quick replies. Actually i was at the now crawley inn, the week of september 21st, but i didnt go in or go to look, as it was full of motorcycle's and people drinking outside everywhere and it was a bit rowdy. . I could prob ably email the now owners and ask if they could send a photo of the initials. My ancestors lived in the hailey area from around 1790 to 1865. Supposedly they also lived at a farm called Downhill Farm on Downhill lane, in Hailey, oxon,uk. I searched tax records since i didnt know if they owned downhill farm or were just tenants. The tax records show a JN Smith as the proprietor, and James Fawdrey as the Occupier, so that didnt give me a definite answer. I would have to try and search old deeds somewhere. I think when it says someone was the proprietor that meant they owned it??? All help is greatly appreciated. marlene
