Dumfriesshire / Re: 'Rakkes' Armstrongs
« on: Thursday 26 October 23 16:27 BST (UK)  »
Can't help you with the origin but the Hawick Word Book mentions Archie 'Raccas' Armstrong
page 50 in the left hand column
https://www.astro.ubc.ca/people/scott/book.pdf
same page in the right hand column there's reference to an Adam Armstrong 'Rattas in Blackhoip' being connected to those nicknamed 'Rackass and variants'

The 'Rattas in Blackhoip' reference is mentioned in item 5 here:
https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=GD224%2f906%2f9&st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=armstrong+liddesdale&ko=a&r=&ro=s&df=&dt=&di=y

The Dictionaries of the Scots Language have numerous variations of Rack, Rek, Rak (and more) but I couldn't see anything that leapt out as an obvious nickname.

Hope that all helps.

The National Portrait Gallery have a few thousand portraits by Lafayette, they aren't all available as images though.

Incidentally if sorted by 'gallery recommended' then you can safely ignore the first 400 as I've been through those.

Could the bit above his left wrist be a combination of the piping on a field service cap and part of a badge?

A google image search for Lafayette's photo mezzo tint threw up an image of a matching folder cover held in a museum down under. The related photo is dated as 'after 1907', the cover wasn't available to view (their site has been updated).

Search here for 'unidentified Edwardian woman' to see the photo and its mount.

The Common Room / Re: Lovetts of Normandy in Notre Dame

Just to add

There's a wikipedia article on William's companions that explains the lack of reliable sources for the list. Put simply the known historical lists are believed to be largely based on names taken from the Domesday book then repeated in other sources.

William's army is believed to have numbered in the thousands.

The list is first name followed by a list of what we think of as surname. If you look at it as multiple pairs of columns you'll see a first name column with large gaps followed by the 'surname' column then the next firstname column and so on.

I'd expect that it only lists 'nobles' or those that brought along troops. The plaque was erected in 1862.

At a guess given the level of detail, 18th century dress, thinking of something like this:

Not sure what boundaries might apply though, possibly very broad and into the next century 1750-1830.
