World War One / Re: Military Record
« on: Sunday 03 September 23 11:04 BST (UK)  »
I know it's almost 9 years since I originally posted this topic but I recently came across an article which may be somehow connected. It details Alfred Howarth's life in Russia, which shows that he was working in Moscow in 1916, yet his Army Record suggests he was possibly enlisted in 1916. He came back to UK late 1917 and he joined the Signals Corp in Jan 1918.

Is it possible there was a bit more to his life in Russia, or am I being a bit James Bondy??

Thanks. I had missed it....don't know how I could miss that though.

Another of life's mysteries. Sadly the record I want isn't one of them.

Apologies if I'm preaching to the converted, but I've just noticed that some records are available as a  JPEG Digital Image.

I've only just noticed it today, when I went on the GRO site. Maybe it's been mentioned already and I've missed it.

Seemingly only available for some images and costs 2.50 a go.

If you can get to Manchester Central Library, you can look at the Registers on microfilm. That will give you age, occupation and an address.

I dont think we will ever know how much some of our ancestors earned unless we find some documented evidence. Too many variables, even their actual job title. Census and Parish records are sometimes too vague or show the occupation in general terms.

The book looks a good read for when I'm at a very loose end.

Thanks, Eric

That would fit. Checked one site which says £4 in 1890 would be worth about 650 today, give or take a 100

I had 3 ancestors who's occupations were variously described as Mechanic/Mill Fitter/Millwright in the latter half of 19 c. I would imagine they all fall into the same category and all 3 seemed to have had a "comfortable" life.

One left a modest Will and on one Census had a Servant/Housekeeper. Another had a piano. It must have cost a few bob as it was of very good quality. I know it was purchased in 1890 something..I came across the receipt some years back and it was still going strong in the early 1970's.

Someone I spoke to a few years back reckoned they would have been classed as skilled workers and probably earned  around 500/600 a week in todays money.

I suppose without these people, the Mills wouldn't have worked or been built. But don't quote me on any of this.

Thanks. I did notice those other abbreviations and it does seem that they fit with Genuki. Didn't think of Genuki, it's surprising what it does tell you.

Thanks for your input. Seems to confirm my thoughts.

In the Baptism Registers for St James, Newchapel, 1750/1780's, there is a 'column' on the right of the page, which I assume denotes where the family was living. I say this as some of those I have looked at lived in Brerehurst and there is 'BRE' in that column. Some have what looks like STAD. Does anybody have an idea where that might denote? My money is on Stadmarslow, on account of it being in the vicinity.

Thanks, Eric
